Just updated to 10.1.1, looking for advice

Ok, So I now have 10.1.1, but I am pretty confused by the way the projects and events were updated, and unsure what I should do to bring order and understanding to my situation.

First off, let me give you the lay of the land for what my previous media management scenario was.

I have 2 media drives, both separate from my main HD. One contained the FCP Projects folder and a folder for Projects NOT IN USE, the other contained the FCP Events folder and a folder for Events NOT IN USE.
(The NOT IN USE folders allowed me to retain access to media and projects I may need to bring back online, but was not currently using)

After updating to 10.1.1, I opted to go ahead and update all projects and events. Did that, then opted to save old projects and events, rather than trash them, because I wasn't sure exactly what I'd gotten myself into.

So, now, in my Libraries panel, I have 2 different Libraries: "MEDIA DRIVE's Projects and Events" (MEDIA DRIVE contained only projects) and "MEDIA DRIVE II's Projects and Events" (MEDIA DRIVE II contained only events)

So, what exactly am I looking at here...if you can understand the situation I'm describing, can you help me understand it?

Thanks in Advance!

Hi,

The change to the way 10.1 deals with media and projects is non trivial. Don't panic, all is well but you have some work to do to get your projects and events into Libraries (or one big library if you prefer but that would miss one of the big benefits of the way the new system works).

Rather than explain everything again - it has been covered a fair bit - can I point you to Ripple Training's excellent videos on the subject? - 1 of 3 is here:

If the link doesn't work just go to YouTube and search Ripple Training - the 10.1 videos should appear near the top of the results.

Ok, watched all 3 (of the Ripple Training) videos on Updating. Very informative, and it gave me an understanding of what is going on with Libraries.

My remaining confusion stems from the fact that I had my PROJECTS and EVENTS on separate drives. Upon update, each of those created a new Library. The Library on the PROJECTS drive, has all my projects, but it also has all the clips used in the projects...

So, are these duplicates of the clips that exist in the library on my EVENTS drive?

I have no direct experience of this scenario because my events and projects were all on the same drive. However, projects can only use clips from events in the same library so I assume that FCPX has included the necessary clips for the projects within the library on the projects drive. It probably has not copied in any clips from the original event that were not in the project timelines. Try dismounting the events drive and see if the projects are still OK - I suspect they will be. Then bring the events drive back up and compare the libraries looking for any clips that are not in both and copying anything that you need from the event disc library to the project disc library.

Others may have a more elegant way to deal with this...

Hmm. As I mentioned, I didn't delete the "Old Projects and Events" folders on either drive. One folder contains projects, the other events. I do have enough room to have both on the same drive.

Would it work if I delete the new libraries that were created, move the old Projects folder to the same drive as the old Events, then select to update those, thereby creating a more manageable/traditional/understandable starting point?

Actually, now I'm thinking that if I copy the Projects from the Project Drive Library into the Events on the Event Drive Library, I may accomplish the same thing. Hmmm. Hesitant to try this.

The first idea is the best. The second should work but you would have to re-link everything I think.

Well, here's what I did. Mostly went with my second idea. Dragged each of the projects from the former PROJECTS drive, to the newly created Events on the former EVENTS drive. As I did this, I was prompted as to whether or not I wanted to include Optimized Media, and I selected to include that. (By the way, all of my media is optimized to ProRes, but reference h264 files on a shared server)

After backing up the PROJECTS library to a removable drive, I disconnected that drive, and trashed that Library.

Now, with all projects and events in the same library, everything seems to be running smoothly.

Thanks again.
