ok guys and girls , I'm shooting my first skate film this weekend and i know i want the final project to be on you tube . so my plan was to start a project with 720 30fps .

my question i can't seam to find a good answer to is can i shoot some of my footage at 30p for smooth action and some at 60p for the ability to do slo-mo , i know i can conform the 60p to slow it down but can i also use parts of it playing at normal speed ? if so will i need to convert it or anything?

what i wants the skater to lead up to the trick then i will go in to slow mo during but i don't really want to have the whole project shot and output in 60p as i won't get smooth looking movement on the non slo mo clips and B-roll .

if someone can help i would be very grateful

What camera are using? Most cameras shoot 29.97 not 30. Edit in a project that's the same frame rate as your video.

Just to add you can either use FCP to retime the clip and have a speed ramp as the speed changes. Or you can blade the clip and use the automatic speed function to return the 60 to its normal frame rate.

You can always use footage shot at 60p in a 30p timeline and have it play at normal speed. In fact, this is the default behavior of FCPX. To get it to be slomo, you have to select the clip and go into the Retime menu and tell it to use "automatic speed." Just do a quick shooting test and you will see. There will be a difference in the way it appears because there will be less motion blur, but most likely it will be fine. It's always best to plan out what you want to be slomo and what you want to be normal speed and shoot accordingly, though.

thanks yeah the who reason i asked is because i want to shoot the lines and b roll with 30p and slower shutter speed for more natural movement and motion , but i will need to shoot some technical tricks at 60p as i will want to slow the flips etc down to show the foot work . its good to know that i can use both in one timeline and edit in the slow mo just where i want it.

cameras for the day will be

D800
gopro HD2
D5100
