Timeline scrolling does not exist in FCP X. When you stop playback the timeline will refresh.

Some folks like it, some don't, should be a switchable option. Fill out the feedback page.

I also would like to have a scrolling timeline.
I think they ignore it cause of speed. With a scrolling timeline the thumbnails have to updated every frame. This will cost a lot of processing power.

I agree the continuous refreshing of the thumbnails would way heavy on the computer. And what's more: all the time we have had this feature when we worked on Avid none of our editors ever used it. So I don't think it is very high on the priority list.

I hate the scrolling timeline and always turn it off if it's an option in whatever app I'm cutting in. Makes it really hard to edit "on the fly" when your clips suddenly move out from under the cursor. that said, I wouldn't object to having it as an option I could ignore. :-)

Agreed I alway turn off scrolling timeline when editing. But it is handy for client viewings.

The solution is just to scrol with a side scrolling mouse or Magic Trackpad.
