Cropping bug
25 Mar 2014 02:14 - 25 Mar 2014 02:19 #43352
by Redifer
Cropping bug was created by Redifer
When I crop an image using the Inspector and then move the image around either with the inspector or with the move tool under the viewer, the crop does not respect the position of the image. So if I crop something off of the left side of the screen and then move the image to the left, the image will become clipped.
This doesn't happen all of the time, but it happens. I don't know why. It might have something to do with rotation.

Could you explain what you mean by this?
"the crop does not respect the position of the image."
Or post screen shots. Not sure what you expect to happen. Which crop function are you using?

Yes it is difficult to explain. Watch this Youtube video (you may want to increase the size to 720p if you have a hard time seeing what's going on in the Inspector:

Hi Joe,
It's a known issue and it's exactly this issue that also seems to be causing the copy/paste attributes problems we are seeing everywhere since 10.1/Mavericks.
In this video (around 1 minute) you can see exactly the same bug you are describing:
vimeo.com/89995406
As you say: it's an intermittent bug. But it's a nasty one as it makes cropping and copy/pasting crop and position attributes quite useless, and there is no workaround I know. Bug-fix updates for 10.1 and Mavericks seem to be on their way, let's pray...

Do you have any idea what produces this condition? Does it happen with all media?

I'd say the combination of cropping and transform is wonky. Regarding what's happening in the video Redifer posted, I've seen this happen a bunch of times.
Sometimes quitting FCP and restarting will clear it. With a chroma-key I just use masks and not the crop so it's less of an issue for me. Sometimes it doesn't happen at all.
It does happen consistently if I crop and then rotate a generator. Fortunately that's not something I have to do very often. I usually use Tokyo Pipinator for that type of thing and I haven't seen the problem there.
I have reported it to Apple since it surely shouldn't be happening.

I'm having the same issues that Ronny and Redifer are experiencing. Copy and Paste attributes (scale, position, crop) seems to be broken. Especially when using the "trim" feature.
Ronny: I watched your vimeo video and can replicate the issues.
It seems like a recent issue. Maybe with the FCP 10.1.1 & OSX 10.9.3 updates? Has anyone found a workaround or fix? I've tried all the basics: trashing prefs, testing with a new user account, new library/project etc. I'm in the process of reinstalling the app now...
This issue happens with the built in FCP generators as well (so I know its not the footage).
Any help or feedback is appreciated!

Have any of you tried use TKY SuperCrop to see if you still get the bug?
www.fcp.co/forum/utility/16193-tky-super...or-advanced-cropping
I usually use this when I crop footage, especially if it may need a feather and find it to work much better.

Thanks Jason! That's a great workaround! It's still kinda disappointing that a very basic feature in FCP is broken, but this will get me through my current project.
Thanks again!
