Is there a way to create a smaller version of a project with only the clips you've used in the timeline in the event?

Create a new library and drag the projects you want to it. It's up to you whether you copy the proxy/optimised media across (it will ask) but it will only take the clips used in this project and copy them to the new library.

Adding to this: just be aware of the fact that at this time FCPX will copy over the entire clips, not only the sections of the clips you have used in the timeline. If for instance in your Project you have only used 10 seconds of a 3 minute clip it will copy the complete 3 minute clip into the new archive Library.

Being able to archive projects with trimmed media including safety handles, like we could do in FCP7, is high on the feature wish-list of many FCPX users. Make sure to post a feature request to Apple about this.

Here is the procedure I used.

As already stated it copies over an entire clip if any portion of that clip is used. However for an event which only uses a few clips out of many, it will still be much smaller.
