Hi there,

Is it possible to set the transcode codec anywhere? I am using RED footage and the Optimised Media seems to have been transcoded in ProRes 4444 making the file sizes almost 5 times the size of the RED RAW files.

Any help would be appreciated.

Hi Damian,

Red footage always gets optimized to ProRes 4444 in FCPX.

If you are worried by the file size it is much better to create Proxies from the R3D files in FCPX. These files are much smaller than optimized 4444 and they allow you to work really fast while maintaining a very high picture quality. Using Proxies you still have access to the original raw R3D files for grading and high-quality output.

If you don't need access to the RAW settings in FCPX you can convert the R3D clips to ProRes 422 in Red CineX Pro and import the ProRes files as original media in FCPX. If you don't need the original 4K or 5K size you can set a different frame size for the ProRes exports. This will also make them easier to work with in FCPX.

Here's a detailed overview about working with RED footage in FCPX and the different options you have:
