Share/Export Bug - FCP X creates gigantic audio file on export

I am going crazy. I have a simple project with one AIFF clip. No video. I am doing a simple music edit and want to export that sequence as an AIFF file.

When I go Share/AIFF, FCP X estimates the short resulting audio file to be around 35 MB in size.

But the actual export takes really long and after about 15% or so it fails, letting me know that the resulting audio file would have exceeded 4 GB. GB????? Yes, GB.

So I tried it again, same process, only this time after the sharing process had started I cancelled it right away. FCP X did save an audio file - only that file was already a few hundred MB in size and when I opened it up in Quicktime Player, the file had a length of 20 minutes. The original project is only 90 seconds.

What's going on here? I trashed preferences, copied the clips into a fresh timeline, nothing. Same ballooning file on export problem.

Has anyone ever seen this happen?

Thanks in advance.

Yes. Is the music in a compound clip? If so, it'll export if you break it apart in a project.

If it's in a CC because you've mixed/effected it... I guess you could duplicate the project, break apart the CC in the duplicate, export it, reimport the comp, and copy/paste the effects from the original CC in the original project.

Thank you plysat! Yes, a compound clip in the project was the reason for the strange export-share behavior. And you are correct, I needed the compound clip to put a reverb effect on a portion of my audio clip.

Here are the steps I tried:
  • I deleted the compound clip and the project exported fine
  • I disabled the compound clip and export did not work. I got the same ballooning file. So disabling the clip was not enough.
  • I duplicated the project, opened up this new project and it exported fine, with the compound clip still in place. Here is the difference - the compound clip in the duplicate project is blue, while in the original it is green. What does that mean? Strange nevertheless.

Here is a screenshot of both projects: note.io/1iSy7Sm

This is clearly a bug in 10.1. This used to work fine in 10.0.9. I have always worked without compound audio clips in my project. I'll file another bug report. Thanks again.

Hey Markus... glad it worked and yes, clearly a bug. I've submitted it as well, (and added your report and screenshot). Good to hear that duplication acts as a workaround for now...
