A client has some footage which has a hum/buzz that needs reducing or removing?

Anyone recommend the best way to do it in fcpx or Logic Pro x ?

Thanks

The built-in Hum Remover in FCPX is really good.

I do not like the 60Hz hum remover AT ALL. It's awful. Horrible! It adds reverb. If someone's mic has the buzz and you enable it, suddenly they sound very reverby. It's bad. Really bad. Unacceptably bad.

To prove my point here's a before and after example using the Hum remover in the Audio Enhancements.

Not sure how that added reverb is acceptable to y'all.

That is odd. I use it all the time, and have never heard it add reverb, by itself. Did you do any noise reduction, also? Also, the level of that hum is really, really loud, too. I've never recorded hum that loud before. Then again, any background noise that is as loud, if not louder than the voices, as in that example, are going to be seriously problematic to deal with, and require better third party tools.

No that was raw audio and then raw audio + hum remover. I assume it just moves (duplicates) the audio 1/60th of a second in one direction or the other to get rid of the hum. Thus the reason for the echo.

Try background noise removal at 40-50%

izotope have an amazing plugin set for FCPX. It's spendy for sure, but it can work miracles.

Just tried Izotope's 10-day free trial and it bogs FCPX down like no tomorrow. It's REALLY greedy with the resources. It could not eliminate the buzz at all no matter what I tried. In fact their hum remover is worse than the one built in to FCPX. I do not recommend that software at all, at least not for use with FCPX and not for doing what I'm trying to do.

Does anyone know how I can remove the Plug-ins from FCPX while still letting me play around with the main app for 10 days?

No, just on a single clip that had the buzz, maybe 10 seconds max.

The plugin is pretty involved and way over my head when it comes to the flexibility of control. It's worked great for me on Red footage where audio went to camera on ten minute takes.

Redlifer, you are a proud owner of a nMP right? That is strange as I'm on a hackintosh that isn't much better than an iMac.

My normal machine (32gb iMac i7) doesn't slow down either

But, there again, its a detailed plugin and I am still trying to get my head around it (and get it to work)

My first job was at a sound mixing house. My boss was an amazingly talented mad scientist when it came to sound. He could remove pretty much any buzz or noise by knowing what frequencies to attack with pretty old equipment by today's standards.

My head is spinning thinking back on that.

I am the proud awaiter of the new Mac Pro. Lemme check on it's status right now... Look at that no change, still "processing". Hopefully I get it before the NEXT Mac Pro comes out.

The app works fine on it's own without any lag or slowdown. But in FCPX it's not so easy so FCPX must be restricting it (keep in mind that I'm forced to use 10.0.9). I was able to remove the buzz with noise reduction after training it on what the buzz sounded like but the hum remover doesn't really do much of anything for me.

Ahh I am using 10.1 fcpx

I am just working on the files now, shocking footage with dreadful audio and a lovely hum present.

I used the background noise removal tool to try and lower hum but the client wants to use the file to project and play through a PA system so I can't see how I can get rid of this completely

I've been getting great results with SoundSoap 3 . Not very expensive and very easy to use and get great results quickly... a total no-brainer if you need to remove hiss, pops/clicks, hum, a/c noise, background noises, etc...
