How much free space is on the drive you're exporting to?

Also, how are you determining the movie is 40gb in size? If your original media was 40 GB, it is possible that your export could be much larger depending on your export settings and whether or not your media has been optimized? You can verify the estimated file size of the export by viewing it in the export dialog that appears when you share your project. If this is where you see the 40gb, then check the free space on the destination drive as Ben suggests. You should leave 15 to 20% of free space on that drive in addition to the 40gb needed for your export.

Are you trying to export to a hard drive formatted as FAT32? That will have a 4GB file limit. If so, you should reformat to Mac OS Extended (Journaled) or ExFAT if you need to be cross-platform. If it's not this, then it's possible you need more space especially if you have what you think is "just enough."
