Greetings:

Now that I've completely migrated over to FCPX, I'm looking to add some high-quality, professional looking plug-ins. No offense to anyone...but I'm not looking for fisheyes, whirlpools, X-wipes, or anything on the "cheesy" front. I already have all those ;-)

In all the promos, research, etc., it's difficult to sift through all of it and know what's best. I'm curious to find out what others are using, what you like, and what you don't like.

Thanks!

Craig

I don't "use" anything in the sense you mention. I only get plugins I need for jobs I'm hired to do. I do have a couple to deal with my camera's specific Log format, but aside from that, I get them as I need them.

Download one of the many free Adjustment Layer title effects to start with. Never pay for this, cause there's too many free ones out there. Better yet, make your own and start to learn to create your own templates in Motion.

I would strongly recommend stuff from motionvfx.com. They actually make stuff that will save you time, like real dust particles, real 3D objects you can move freely in motion, great looking flares. And totally agree with what Ben says, make your own templates so you can get better with motion.

I've been very happily with Alex4D. Lots of free ones and very useful tools as well.

If you haven't yet, I suggest you check out FxFactory from Noise Industries. It's a whole system that includes quality plugins from folks like Ripple Training and Simon Ubsdell (hawaiki and Tokyo Productions) plus a number of useful free plugins.

+1 for Alex4D and CoreMelt.

Ripple Training and Simon Ubsdell also have some useful freebies, and you might find some useful things among the free offerings from Sight Creations (FX Mahoney). Besides the obvious advantage of the free stuff they are also great for learning Motion since you can open and modify the free ones to see how they work.

And, of course, there are all of the free offerings here on fcp.co.

My approach would be:
1) Get Motion and start to understand what it can do.
2) Get acquainted with the offerings from the top-tier paid groups (e.g. CoreMelt, Ripple Training, FxFactory)
3) Get acquainted with the offerings from the top-tier free groups (e.g. Alex4D, fcp.co, Sight Creations)
4) Then, knowing the lay of the land, as Ben says, build up your stock based on need as it arises.
