I have to deal with subtitles quite a lot of time.
With FCPX you got the nice shortcut to insert either "Basic Title" or "Basic Lower Third".
Both of them won't match subtitle needs. Especially "Basic Title" is not very useful and very buggy in 10.1.x.
So I took a copy of one of my "home made" subtitle templates and replaced the names with "Basic Title". Then opened the FCPX package and replaced the "Basic Title" in there with my "Basic Title".
Works fine and is way easier compared to click the title browser and select a title effect.
If you try to do something like that make sure to have a copy of FCPX. Also any updates probably will overwrite your settings.
Have fun.
