Loud Distortion During Storyline Playback

Sometimes when playing back clips on the storyline, the audio will peak with a loud buzz. The meters also peak into the red. Playing the clip again sometimes solves it, and fortunately it renders without the distortion.

But this is a problem during an edit session. I typically work with ProRes 422 videos with aiff audio, but I don't think that matters. I've never had this problem in 7 no matter what audio file type I worked with.

Have you applied a compressor or limiter effect to that audio clip?

Hi Ronny,

I was able to replicate the issue and with this particular clip, its Sample Rate is 44.1 kHz with no effects applied.

Hi Lillian,

I have read about a similar issue before, but I cannot reproduce it with any 44.1 kHz file here. In my experience FCPX handles 44.1 kHz files correctly.

Is this an mp3 file? If so, could you try something for me?

Select the clip in your Library Browser and export it as AIFF, import the AIFF file into FCPX and replace the mp3 file with the AIFF. Do you still have the playback issues?

Just as a point of information - I have imported MP3's into FCP X and if optimize media is checked the mp3 is converted to a wav file at 44.1k.

I have never had this distortion problem on anything.

What do you have for settings in Audio-MIDI setup? Conflicting sample rates between different audio devices can cause issues like this.
