Which version of FCPX are you using?

Is it risky to move the file to my external for transfer to another computer, I wanted to copy and move but I dont have enough free space to copy apparently.

Does this mean your Event and your Projects are stored on the system drive of a 2010 MBP? If so, no wonder you have issues with playback and editing.
Updating your OS or adding RAM will not help much as long as you work from your system drive on this computer. The best solution for any of the problems you have been describing is to get a decent and fast FireWire 800 drive and move your FCPX Events and Projects to that drive.
Then you can still update the OS and RAM of the 2010 MBP if you wish, or you can connect your external drive to a faster computer. But even without all this your projects will already run better from your external drive. Most important is that you don't work with FCPX from the computer's internal drive (except for short family movies).

Thank you very much for the response, I thought that I had been doing this as I have a Seagate USB external attached, excuse the computer illiteracy again but how do i know when I'm working off the external, all camera files are on the external.

If your FCPX Events and Projects are located on your internal drive you are working off the internal. If your FCPX Events and Projects are located on your external drive you are working off the external. As your external drive is USB2 it even doesn't make a real difference: working off an external USB2 drive is as bad (or even worse) as working off your internal drive.
What you need to do: get a fast FireWire 800 external drive and move your Final Cut Events and your Final Cut Projects folders to that drive. You can even do that using the Finder. Then, if you haven't done this already, make sure all your imported clips are optimized to ProRes 422. You will see an immediate improvement.
USB2 is useless for editing, except for small SD projects. You still can use the USB drive for storing your original camera files instead of keeping them on your internal drive, this will give you more space on your internal drive.

Yep, I get ya, and yes I've been storing the events and projects on the intrnal drive, idiot that I am, ok so I'll have to buy another drive then, I have a SSD drive waiting to go into my computer would this make any difference do you think?
Once again, thanks for your patience!

The SSD will make a significant difference when opening applications and saving files onto that drive, but it won't have much influence on your editing experience. FCPX will feel somewhat snappier, though. And yes, it is much better to work off a fast enough external drive. You will immediately notice the difference.
