Hi Guys

I have completed a 1080p edit for a client and they have asked for a copy on DVD (they don't have blue ray).. She wants the films separated in to 2 small parts.

1. Do I 'Duplicate the project' and change its settings for output to SDVD? (whats the best output for this?)

2. How do i get the 2 parts to show up as a menu options in the DVD using FCPX?

Can anyone suggest a good workflow to follow please?

Thanks

1. Don't make an SD project.

2. You can't do this in FCP. You need iDVD or DVDSP or Toast.

I made a DVD with the Apple External DVD drive direct from FCPX.
I'm pretty sure it downsizes for you.

Thanks Tom/Peter

Peter, were you able to split the project though (think Tom maybe right there)

If I am to use iDVD, do i export the master file and let iDVD or toast do the converting etc?

iDVD does the compression. You need to give the exact specifics of the project. iDVD is old and only accept certain specs.

Yes, just export a master file (prores most likely) and add that to the iDVD contents screen. In iDVD be sure to go to the Project Menu and choose Project Info. Make sure the Aspect, NTSC, etc. are set correctly, but also set Encoding to Professional Quality. That gets you variable two-pass encoding with very high quality and will also fit more on a disc.

I also recommend doing File-->Save As Disc Image... instead of direct burning. This gives you a .dmg file that can be used to quickly burn multiple discs using Disk Utility.

BTW, iDVD works flawlessly in Mavericks. I use a Canon XF100, so depending on the content I shoot 720/60 and 1080/30 - both downsample to DVD with excellent quality.

Thanks dDixon

I started using Toast, but then after reading your post I tried iDVD and the professional setting and it was much better results.

No one really asks for dvd's I have never been able to deliver it in a nice quality (unless it's my eyes used to higher res)

Glad it worked out for you! I still do a few projects for school and sports groups and they want a physical product. I usually just provide a couple of copies and they duplicate them. Never had a call for blu-ray, and they always find the quality excellent.
