Importing footage into FCPX always creates more footage?

Hello,

I am importing footage into an FCPX project from an external hard drive.

FCPX is creating duplicate clips (id clips) regardless of whether I choose to 'Copy files into...' or 'Leave files in place...' in the media storage option when importing.

I assumed that no new clips would be created if I chose 'Leave files in place...'. I just want to edit from the original footage. Is this possible? Otherwise my hard drives are going to fill up very quickly!

Thanks.

What is the format of the files you are importing? Are you importing files from a video older on the external HDD or from a camera card folder?

Cab you post a screenshot of the duplicate files FCPX creates inside the Library?

It's C300 footage, so MXF files.

I'm importing from an external HDD.

I'm trying to figure out which is the best option for importing because both options create the duplicate files.

Ah, I see. FCPX 10.1.1 still re-wraps MXF to QT. The MXF files stay on your external HDD, the QT files are added to your Library. When importing is finished you can use the Consolidate command to consolidate your Event media to a folder on your external drive. Then you can delete the MXF files if you wish (although it's always good to have a safety backup somewhere).
