Re-attaching detached audio in FCP X. was created by Jonathan Levin
Can someone tell me how to collapse an audio/video clip once the audio has been detached? The Collapse command does not do this.
Thanks.
Jonathan

You have to combine it in a compound clip.

Tom,
Thanks.
I've been avoiding Compound Clips as much as possible since I hardly used them in FCP 7, but it seems like more than a few things really need to be addressed using Compound Clips in X.
Time for me to dive into this......

Place the playhead at the beginning of the detached clip and select the clip. Hit Shift F to reveal the source clip in the event and then edit that into the timeline. Delete the detached clips. Copy and paste attributes from the detached clips before deleting if necessary.
Also - send feedback to Apple suggesting a way to rejoin detached clips - the opposite of "break apart clip items".

Thanks anickt.
I'm wondering why anyone would use "Expand" at all instead of "Detach".
Yes, if Apple would make it so that you can re-attach audio to video with a simple menu/command, that would be nice. In fact, I'm sort of surprised it's not there now
To make matters more confusing, there is "Break Apart Clip Items", which you STILL can't collapse.

Odd. I wonder why anyone would use detach instead of expand.

Hi Tom,
With detach, you can also move the sound track independently of the video.
If expand included the function of moving the audio up or down the story line, than I guess there would be no need for the detach command. Maybe I'm missing something.

Agreed, if you want to move the sound independently of the video, but then why would you need to reattach it? I guess circumstances might arise, but it would be simpler as described above to edit in a fresh copy of the clip.

I basically never use detach. If I want independent sound from a clip then I just put the whole thing underneath the primary storyline and treat it as an audio file. When I'm finally happy with the edit then I might detach it.

Jonathan, you can resync or move the audio independently by opening the clip in it's own timeline. I also wonder why people detach audio in the first place.

I was just about to suggest right-click the clip, Open In Timeline, adjust audio. Good catch Soundsie.

Tom and Seanus, thanks for that.
Soundwise,
I hadn't played around in the "Open In Timeline", but I see that it i easier to manage some audio things in there. I will try my hand at not detaching and see if I can do what I need to do with the expand and Open in Timeline items.
