Really Bizarre Problem With Video and YouTube Audio

Hi all. I looked and didn't find anything here on this, so I am seeking your help.

I created a video in FCPX and exported (in a wide variety of formats to figure this problem out. None worked.). I then uploaded to YouTube as I have done in the past.

Here's where things get weird. If you play it on a computer on YouTube, it's fine. If you play it on an iPad with the YouTube app, it's fine. If you play it on an iPhone with the YouTube app, the audio is completely messed up with the exception of one person (who I had to re-shoot). The rest of it sounds like alien communication. However, if you play it on an iPhone with headphones plugged in, it's fine!

Here's a rough clip I uploaded for testing purposes.

So I pondered this problem, and after some messing around in FCPX, I found that the parts that are garbled have audio that is H.264 Linear PCM codecs and the part that works does not. I had original footage of the individual I had to re-shoot, so I replaced her part. ( rough clip here) Guess what? The whole thing was now garbled.

My conclusion is that it has to be the H.264 Linear PCM codec. If that's the case, what is the fix?

Any help would be appreciated. Thank you so much!

WTF... that's really weird. Does it do the same thing on Vimeo? Played fine on my computer, but on my phone it sounded like the old days of Napster and those really poorly compressed audio tracks. I have no idea what could be causing that, but it's gotta be something with YouTube. I'd email them for support, but you know, it's Google and they don't offer support for anything.

Can you do an experiment and make a prores master file and bring it back in to FCP X and see if it's the same thing?

My only guess is FCPX somehow isn't recompressing that section of audio, then youtube does recompress it, but terribly. Like FCP7 and back, it wouldn't reencode audio or video if it was the same specs as the output settings.

Also try throwing on an audio filter and see if that fixes it. If it does, then that means FCP X doesn't recompress all audio at the moment. Which is odd.

Made the prores and brought it back in. Sounded perfect in FCPX. Uploaded the prores to YouTube. Same audio problem.

Tried audio filters and uploading in different formats. Same problem.

The video won't even play on the Vimeo iOS app. You can see it's there and the thumbnail looks good, but it won't play.

I've edited and uploaded a lot of stuff to our YouTube channel. This is the first time this has appeared.

Here's a sample of what I have tried thus far:

  • tried about 6 different exports in FCPX. Nope.
  • burned to DVD from FCPX, ripped with Handbrake on Windows 7, uploaded. Nope.
  • exported prores from FCPX, ripped the audio in external application to mp3, imported mp3, removed audio from video clips, added mp3, exported. Nope.
  • converted said ripped mp3 to AIFF in Audacity, imported into FCPX, exported. Nope.
  • tried various formats in Compressor. Nope.
  • exported .mov from FCPX, imported into Adobe Premiere Pro, exported as a YouTube file. Nope.

I'm not a professional. I have taught myself everything I know, and it isn't much. I have no idea what else to do.
