When finished with projects

When you are finished with a project, do you copy only the project file or do you copy all the clips as well?

I am finished but, I might need some of the clips later. So perhaps I copy everything even if it takes up a lot of space.

What do you do?

You mean archiving it for later retrieval? You want to use the Consolidate command, and consolidate it to an external folder for archiving. When done, you can delete it all from the FCP X Library.

But when consolidating, FCPX just throws every single file in one folder on the drive I chose. It's one hell of a mess to clean up. If I want the project file as well, I have to copy it inside FCPX? The project file was not moved to my backup drive. Only the clips. I chose "Consolidating library files".

Consolidate simply gathers all media together, Managed and External. If you have no External media, simply copy the Library by itself to an archive location. The Project by itself, without the clips, is useless. You want to keep the whole Library in tact, or your media goes missing.

I want to copy both the project and clips to another drive. But when I do, the clips and projects turn red and tell me that files are missing. I'm told that the files are only linked to, not copied. I simply want to move the whole content from the drive a was working with to my backup drive. And then I want to duplicate the content to a second backup drive. This operation seem impossible(read: the clips goes red and files are missing. WHAT?!).

When you consolidate, hit command-9 to bring up the background tasks. If there are tasks still running, let them finish and then see if it worked.

Did you do this via FCP X or the finder? You should be able to use relink files to reconnect them if you copied everything with the finder.

I did inside FCPX. Relink didn't work. FCPX told me that that the files were missing. But they are there. Every single clips in Finder.

Now, as we speak I'm trying to copy inside Finder.

Are you in proxy mode by any chance? Does the red screen say missing proxy or missing file?

Also the finder is not the recommended way to move FCP X files around. Moving libraries with the finder is OK, just not the media.

Always proxy. And it says files missing.

I know about the problem with moving media around in the finder, but I just had to try. But I find it so strange that in my white drive, I have everything. Every clip, project without trouble. But when moving them to my black drive, it says files missing. And when trying to relink, FCPX says it can't find the missing media.

After copying inside the finder, it now works. I have had both white and black opened in FCPX without any conflicts. But I have another problem. I have an event that doesn't have this star on the left side of its name. There is also nothing inside the event. It's not possible to delete the event. Inside finder I find everything that should be inside the event, but FCPX says it's empty...

What version of FCP X are you using? What does "I have had both white and black opened in FCPX without any conflicts." mean?

Version 10.1

I was told every media(don't remember exactly) is given a unique number. When copying inside FCPX, the copied files was given a different number. When copying inside the finder the copied files were given the same number - leading to trouble/conflict inside FCPX.

That only applied to Events and Projects in FCPX 10.0.9 and earlier. In FCPX 10.1, that doesn't happen. You can duplicate and copy Libraries to your heart's content.

With 10.0.9 and older versions that mostly applied to events and projects. If you opened FCP X with events/projects with the same 'identifier' it could only open one copy of them. You could move footage with the finder, but again it was not advised.

I'm having trouble understanding what your issue is. I think the initial reason you were seeing everything offline is that you were set to proxy mode. You may have not had proxy files in your library.

Are you on 10.1.1?

So it's completely fine copying inside finder? No matter what files I want to copy?

Take a look at this screenshot:
bildr.no/view/bDJLbFpL

The one "Zombietime" does not have any stars, and it has no content inside. But when i access "Zombietime" in Finder it's all there. I can not import files into "Zombietime" neither can I delete it.
