Does audio always have to be connected to video?

Hi folks, does audio always have to be connected to a video clip in the timeline, i've edited an audio interview into different audio clips and I want to delete some video clips in the timeline but this will delete the audio connected also.
Is there a way around this besides combing the audio clips into one compound clip ( I may want to change the order of the interviewees answers at a later stage you see.

The interviewee is not seen speaking on camera, just to clarify.

Hard to tell from your description. Are you talking about audio that's collapsed into the video, or audio that's connected. If the former use the detach function. If the latter replace the video with a gap clip. You can also edit audio only into the timeline so the issue doesnt arise.

Funny. I was just trying to figure this out today As well.

What I found, and maybe it is not really the right way, is to expand the clip so audio is seperated from video portion. I then. There is a menu command (not at my computer) where you can detach audio from video. I then drag the video portion upward above the main story line. The audio for that clip will move below the story line. With only the video selected, just delete the video portion.

Again not at my editing station, hope this is some help.

Audio thats connected, thanks, ok so they have to be connected, it would be handy if you could line them up to the video without connecting them and then decide which audio you want connected to which image.

There are no tracks. Everything's connected to the primary storyline. You can change the connection point at any time to connect it to any clip.

The shift - delete I believe is what you are looking for, a very handy key to know, it will only delete the selected clip and not any clips attached to it, if you have an extend apple keyboard it is the other delete key not far from the primary delete key. It is known as replace with gap in the edit menu.

Cheers

As the other said, but you can also do what I do and that is put the interview clips BELOW the primary.
Combine them in a secondary and add a gap in the primary when you want to see your talking head.

This way you never have to break apart video and audio and if you change the edit and want a different section of your talking ahead visible you done't have to reconstruct the video of the interview.

It'sactually one of the biggest features of editing in X. Did always cost me a lot of time to change interview edits in 7..

Happy editing
Carsten

That is actually the opposite of how we teach it in the Apple authorized classes, and how most editors I know do interview edits. Your interview is the core of your story. Edit it in the Primary Storyline, get it timed right, get it working on it's own. This gives you the best stroy edit.

Then, add b-roll as Attached Storylines. Plural. Each group being in their own Attached Storyline.

The interview is the core of the story, and will dictate the b-rol clips, not the other way around.
But you "can" do it any way you wish.

I just would never allow my b-roll to dictate my story, meaning it gets to be attached.

Than I can only thank the creators of FCP x for their infinite wisdom to allow me to work the way I do :-)

Because I don't have 'B'rolls'. Everything in my edit is equally important!

You probably misunderstand the term 'b-roll', which is a technical term, no 'qualification' ;)

The standard-procedure editing an interview is indeed: audio first!
The storyline in FCPX doesn't have to be video! Could be audio only too ... !
(but for synch-purposes, it is easier to use a+v together)

When the audio is done, you do have a 'clutter' of clips - you have to hide the 'jumps' in video - here comes the b-roll into place: say, your subject gave a lengthy answer, you'd edited in the middle by cutting off a segment - in audio pretty ok, in video you'd notice a 'jump':

Cover this with some b-roll material.
I LOVE the phrase 'noddy shots', I once get taught: some 'neutral' face- expression the interviewer made, recorded before/after the interview, just done for cut-away purposes...

(Karsten with a K to Carsten with a C... )

The new book "Apple Pro Training Series: Final Cut Pro X 10.1, Professional Post-Production" goes through the process and explains things really well.

Cheers! What would be the quickest way of switching the interview Audio to the primary storyline and the video as secondary connected would you know? I'm editing upside down so to speak it seems!

no need to fix it, if you don't break it ... :

Why did you apply video to the main storyline anyhow - if you don't need it??
shift-3, and your selection in the Event is applied to Project/Storyline 'audio only'...

get inspired by Steve & Mark in this episode of MacBreakStudio, about 'audio only' as Primary

If you later need the corresponding video, shift-f selects the exact same part in your Event ...

Plan B (a+v is in the Storyline...)
extract audio ctrl-shift-S
extract from storyline cmd-alt-arrow up
erase video ...
=> your main storyline is a 'gap', main audio and secondaries attached to ...
looks a bit weird to me ! :woohoo:

Not necessarily audio only, but interview clips with video and audio, where b-roll/cut-aways will cover most of the interview video, but not all.
