How to convert an animated gif into mov (or otherwise get FC to play nice with it) was created by scotopia
Hey All,
As the title states I'm looking for a method of bringing in animated gifs so that they work the way you'd expect in the timeline of an FC project. I see this being done in content such as that of the PBS Idea Channel, and this is the same kind of thing I am looking to do:
I know you can just play it on your desktop, record your screen with Quicktime, and then pull that in; but I'm hoping there is a better way. Thanks!

You could try splitting the GIF up into its component frames and importing them as an image sequence in Quicktime Player 7 (or using your preferred image sequence building method). From there you can export it as a quicktime and import that quicktime into FCPX as a regular old video.
I did a quick search but couldn't find a simple Mac GUI or command line tool to split a GIF (I'm sure there is one somewhere), but there are plenty of web apps that will do it for you. I tried GIF Explode and it worked okay, and even had a handy bookmarklet.

Thanks for the input. I actually ended up finding a $5 program on the mac app store that did the conversion from gif right to mov (I didn't already have QT7).
