Simclip? was created by damiangrady
Hi,
Can someone explain to me what a simclip (symclip?) is? I've watched a few tutorials in the last few days that mention them but don't actually say what they are.

Basically they're aliases that point to the media's true location.

A number of different ways. You can create them in the Finder if you like. In FCP it completely depends on what version you're using.

The basic answer is:
When you ingest clips you have the option the "Leave Files In Place" or Import Files to the Library. If you choose to "leave files in place" they just point to where the files are as a symlink. No real media is moved to the Library.

I see Tom is answering you while I was typing. You will get a better answer from him.

Dave gave an excellent answer. In additio. Yo leaving the files on place, you can also put them in a separate external location. These will leave symlinks inside the library's Original Media folder.

Also, if you have Managed media (stored physically inside the Library package), and Consolidate it to an External location, the files are moved from the Library to the external location, and links are created inside the Library.
