Canon 7D Media Import oddity was created by ktc@conwaycorp.net
A while back the option of setting in and out points when importing from my 7d disappeared... I thought it odd to take that away, but just figured Apple had a decent reason. I got a 5d the other day and shot some stuff and when I went to import it, I was able to set in and out points, play the media from the card and see waveforms... just like it used to be w the 7d. When I went to import from my 7d immediately after, all those options were in place... again. Everything was wonderful. Today, I go to import 7d footage and it is back to showing just the thumbnails (or list depending on what I've selected)... no way to set in and out points, no wave forms, nothing. It also won't let me create an archive. Anyone know what gives... I've clicked all around the Media Import box and nothing.
Thanks
Kevin

When you're importing from a camera or camera archive that has the whole folder structure, which FCP reads as a camera, you can import segments. If you are simply importing files from a drive you cannot. You cannot import part of a file from a drive, only when the file is being copied.

I'm importing straight from the 7d. I'm not removing the card from the camera. I format the card in the 7d. I wonder if that is the problem.

The way I do is to make an image file straight from the card at the very beginning (before importing files to FCP) so everything is preserved. I keep that image file as both backup and file import.
When the volume structure is preserved I have no trouble doing IN and OUT when I am importing files...
Memory cards from DSLRs, AVCHD stuff from Camcorders, P2 etc etc all work perfectly

Problem solved. If I use a card reader it behaves properly... I can set in/out point, see waveforms, and make archive. If I use the camera, it just shows thumbnails. That seems like something Apple overlooked.
