I have projects where I use lower thirds a ton and need to repeat them often. I just made a compound clip of the frequently used ones and put them in a keyword collection which I can then revisit when needed. Is this a good way of doing this or could I get burned somehow? thx

Yep that's a good way to go.
You could even create a Title Template Library and store all your title template CCs inside it, so you can open that Library any time you need to use a template cc in any given Project.
When you drag a template CC from your Template Library into your Project Library FCPX will create a new parent compound clip that will be independent from the original one.
Just beware:
When you use instances of the same Compound Clip in different parts of a Project or in different Projects in the same Library, every change you make to one instance of the CC will also be reflected in all other instances of that CC that you have used in any Project in the same Library. Sometimes you want this, and sometimes you don't.
If you don't want this the only thing you need to do is to select the new instance of the CC on the Timeline and choose Clip > Reference New Parent Clip. This will make the selected CC independent and any changes you make to it will only apply to that one.

That's a great idea.
I ran into a problem yesterday when I tried to eliminate the fade at the end of a lower thirds from the cc and it affected the rest. This definitely addresses that.
Thanks yet again Ronny!
