Optimise / Transcoding - H264/ ProRes was created by Simon Balch
Hello All. I am new to FCPX. Just learning the ropes with Larry Jordan's training.....
A question. When importing, I choose to optimise/ transcode media. However when inspecting the codec of that transcoded media, which I assume would now be prores, the inspector details it as H264. Or whatever codec the original media was. Any help much appreciated. Ta.

The inspector always shows the original media specs whether it's playing back optimized or proxy.

Hi Simon,
You are correct: when you select a clip the clip Info tab in the Inspector shows the format of the original media the clip is referencing to, not the format of the optimized files. Optimizing to ProRes does not change the format of the original media, it creates new ProRes media in the optimized folder and these media are used for smoother editing.

Great info guys.
A probably dumb ?: let's say you already have pro res media on another drive, if you go to import that media in X, does it re-prores (re-transcode) that media ?

No. Media that is in I-frame formats will not be optimized. ProRes already is, so it's not re-optimized.
