Optimized and proxy: A few questions??? was created by Jonathan Levin
Greetings.
Today I decide to play around with proxy media on my test media and test project. My original imported media was optimized, and I noticed that the playback functions and timeline a kind of lag-gy, especially with 1080p media, as others have pointed out.
So I decided to transcode the media to PR Proxy. After doing that, I learned that you switch from one to the other in the Viewer Display functions.
Interestingly, I set my viewer zoom to 100% and switched back and forth from optimized to proxy. Way cool!
In addition, playback and editing on the timeline in proxy mode seems to be a little more spirited.
My questions: Before exporting a project to a QT master file, do I need to remember to switch the Viewer Display>Media back to Optimized? Or is everything always exported at optimized quality.
Where is the actual proxy file (if there is one)?
How do you delete a proxy transcode, or can this even be done?
Thank you all for your help as usual.
PS- I am liking X more and more as I learn. One thing I especially love is the ability to raise and lower audio levels AS the video is playing! In 7, play would stop as soon as you did anything to the audio. This will make working with audio a pleasure. I digress.

"Before exporting a project to a QT master file, do I need to remember to switch the Viewer Display>Media back to Optimized?"
Yes.
"Where is the actual proxy file (if there is one)?"
It's in a folder inside the event folder, inside the library bundle.
"How do you delete a proxy transcode, or can this even be done?"
Open the library bundle with the application closed and trash the proxy folder.

Tom,
Thank you so much for that info.
Would be nice if there was some sort of "delete proxy media" thing like there is for render files. Am I correct to assume that if I have 3G of optimized media, that the proxy would be around 1GB.
You have a nice weekend sir.

Thanks Ben.
Tom:
I looked at the package contents of my test project. While the "original" media (video) is 4.11GB, the Proxy transcode in the package weighs in at about 525MB!!!
This is amazing because as I wrote before, switching back and forth from Optimized to Proxy did show what I would consider visually a bit lower res, but not horrible image at 100% in the viewer. But then again that's just within FC.
