Not showing up in the Midwest USA yet. Just a camera raw update.

Now it showed up but it is a 2.2GB download of 10.1 from December 19th.

I'm seeing the same thing... 10.1 showing up as "1 update available" with the install button greyed out and saying "installed". Maybe in the morning it will show up properly.

To answer the original question: NO... it doesn't make the timeline faster.

I like FCPX a lot, but one of my pet peeves is how sluggish and lurchy the timeline is.

I have an 8-core Mac Pro 4,1 with 48gb of Ram, a GTX 680 with 4gb v-ram and a CalDigit raid 0. Yet when I hit the spacebar, more often than not, the rainbow ball just spins. And then the wait... and then finally the cursor lurches forward or stalls while the video plays on. Or the audio plays and the video stays still.

I'm less than satisfied with timeline performance on FCPX 10.1.1, to say the least.

Anyone else with similar experiences? Anyone with performance suggestions? (Apart from buying suspiciously expensive ice-bucket from the Apple store...)

My iMac late 2012 responds better. Loads faster, plays back immediately. I can edit titles with no problems, which was a mess in previous versions. PaulG, your mac is old.

My quad-core 2008 MP, 16GB RAM, running off internal 4TB drives, an a ATI Radeon HD 5870, has always run really well, very responsive, even with 4K RED and 4K BMPCC media. The update has actually added some snappiness to things. But then, I've never seen FCPX sluggish on my system.

PauG, what connection does that RAID use to your MP?

schloerg, put two 5870's in that "old" Mac Pro, and eSATA RAID, it'll out perform your iMac. It's not that old. In fact, it is about the same relative age as your 2012 iMac.

What have you tried to improve performance? What OS are you running? What Media are you using?

10.1.1 is indeed more responsive with long-form projects, I have tested it all morning.

I'm afraid it won't solve the different FCPX responsiveness issues some people are having due to updating to Mavericks over ML. A clean re-install of the boot drive is still the only way to solve this. Once that is done 10.1.1 will fly like a rocket.

PaulG: one of my test machines is exactly the same MacPro as yours, except for the graphics card, and FCPX is very fast on it. I concur with Ben that your GPU is the bottleneck. The 4GB VRAM version of the 680XT requires manual modifications to enable OpenCL. Without this procedure, which has te be carried out very carefully, your card is useless for FCPX and for any OpenCL applications. As these mods are unsupported and they provide no guarantee that the card will effectively work I'm not going to go into any details, but you can do a google search.

The best "supported" card is the one I'm running.
ATI Radeon HD 5870

Put two of them in, and you'll get the FCPX dual GPU support. There's a whole thread here somewhere about that.

There are other unsupported cards that folks are running just fine with, some require flashing, and you don't get some power-up screens. Pros and cons. If I wasn't moving up to the new MP, I'd just put a second 5870 in my MP (if my AJA LHi didn't eat up so much space).

it must be "MAC version" or simple PC cards ?

An Apple branded version has the OS X compatible firmware installed.
A PC version may (or may not) need to be flashed so it will work with a Mac.
How much tinkering do you want to do?

currently i have only a MBP retina.... but i want to buy an older macpro (2010) and i am wondering if i can have good performance with a proper card (maybe two of them )?
Is it worth it ?
I cant afford a newer MP ....

The Mac 4,1 is a little old, but it should be sufficient to run FCPX. My RAID is a CalDigit Element running in mini-SAS to a PCI card/raid controller. The Black Magic Disk speed test says about 285/mbs read/write speeds.

The graphics card is a EVGA GTX680 4gb PC version that I'm running without EFI boot (just means that I don't get an Apple on boot)

I'm running Mavericks 10.9.1

The media is usually 1080/23.976 ProRes with not a lot of layers.

@Ronny I'll dig around for OpenCL support for my card

@Ben I don't mind flashing my card or updating drivers as long as I can find a good set of instructions. I'll dig around Netkas.

Does anyone remember if there's an app to test OpenCL performance on a card. I had one, but I can't remember what its called...
