FCP X video properties settings. was created by Jonathan Levin
Greetings.
Trying to figure out best way to set up a new project:
Say you've got a mix of video clips, in my case I have a video logo that I place at the beginning of my videos.
That logo is 1440x1080i (1920x1080) that I created when I was working with some HDV projects in FCP 7.
I've also got 1080p 1920x1080 video from my dslr.
If I create a new project and the first thing that goes into the project is that logo at 1080i, the project property is set to 1080i IF I leave the video properties button set to "Based on first clip" (also the default). If I I then add my 1080p video, the project settings, project, as expected stays at 1080i.
If on the other hand I add my 1080p video first the project is 1080p "Based on first clip" I then add 180i logo, project still 1080p
So my question is: if I am planning on using mixed video sizes i.e. that logo, maybe some SD stuff along with the 1080p from the dslr or some other progressive capture video device, should I manually change the Video Properties to Custom>1080p format, 1920x1080 resolution, 29.97 rate?
Am I over thinking this?
Thanks again for all you help along the way.
Jonathan

Hi Jonathan,
Assuming your final product will be 1920 x 1080, the same as most of your source material, then use that. Frame rate should match your dslr footage, which will also be progressive - so 29.97fps 1080p.
The animated logo should be OK but these things can suffer if you change the frame rate. De-interlacing will give some loss of quality.
Ian.

Thanks Ian.
I'm thinking there are two ways to set up a new project with mixed media, I want the resolution to match your highest quality clip:
1) Create new project, leave default "based on first clip" selected and then import any of my 1080p FIRST. Then add everything else.
2) Create new project, set up custom project 1080p 30fp so on. Import media in any order.
Seem reasonable?
Thanks.

Option 2 seems reasonable. Does 10.1 still undo that when the first clip of another format is placed in the project? I don't have a way at the moment to find out. If that is the case then #2 is a good thing. I used to have to trick it by placing a dummy clip in the format I wanted first so it would stay that way, then remove it later.
Here is the main question, what camera is the 1080i footage from? I'm assuming HDV? FCP X does a decent job of deinterlacing 60i to 30p. I'm of the mindset that interlaced footage is the devil and needs to be stopped.

Darren,
I just tested this: If you set up a custom project (1080p) and import the first clip from some other format (HDV), the custom settings do stick.
In addition, playback seems good too. At least from within FCP X.
Some of the video I was playing around with were from a Canon HV 30. So yes, HDV 1440x1080.

Cool, I just got to my computer and did the same. I'm glad this was fixed. That really got frustrating before. It's like Apple is taking more of the training wheels off.
