No audio on part of my master export...

OK. New problem, I think.

I've been experimenting with exporting a master file from one of my test/learning projects. The problem I'm encountering is that audio in a particular clip is not exporting with the sound. The clip was something I shot on a Nikon D800 using a mixer and connecting that to the camera. The audio and video for that clip play fine in the project timeline, but when I export it and play, there is no audio.

Maybe this is a clue: The project was initially set up as a 1080i project, but the clip that I am having an issue with is 1080p, according to info in the inspector. The audio is 48kHz. But everything plays fine in the project.

If I create a new project, and then bring in the clip, and then export that, it seems to work fine.

Ask any questions and I will try to answer. Sure is baffling.

Hi Jonathan,

Using a 1080p clip on a 1080i timeline should not lead to any audio export problems. If the audio and video play fine in the project timeline you should get the same result when you export the edit.

Many times unexpected export issues can be solved by creating a new project and dropping the clips from the problematic project into the new one, which you have done. So I wouldn't worry too much, just continue working in the new project timeline and post back should you experience more export issues in this new project as well.

Ronny,

Thanks.

Another thing I was doing was working on a project that was an xml export using 7 to 10 app.

I've created a new project/sequence. I copied and pasted the timeline elements including the problematic clip from the xml project to the newly created one.

After rendering and an export Master File, the audio is indeed fine! Thanks. So it had something to do with the originally created XML project/timeline/7 to 10 thing not liking the addition of another video from another source.. I deleted the original xml project.

Another thing I noticed is that when I go to export and I get the export master file window, the default QT file name is that of the project. If I change that name to something like TEST, the file icon on my desktop reflects that name change but when it opens in QT, the file has the project name at the top of the window.

But solved my audio issue. Thanks for your help again.

I would send them an email. They will respond and are really great about fixing the software. It will be especially helpful to them if you still have the gremlin infested XMLs.

Darren,

You are referring to Assited Editing 7 to X. If I can easily reproduce problem I may get Intouch with them. Right now I'm working against the clock to learn enough of X so I can comfortably start a payng project on the new platform, assuming someone has money out there to pay......

Had to join up just to chime in on this ... I see that your project is listed as 1080i and your camera is a D800. The D800 does not shoot interlaced. In fact, as far as I know, NO DSLR shoots interlaced. It sounds as if you're trying to set up FCPX as it was done in the old days with FCP 7 where you had to specify the parameters of the timeline. You don't need to do that anymore. Simply put one of your clips into the beginning of the project and X does all the work. I think that might be the reason your clip worked in a new project.
I use DSLRs daily for video and everything is silky smooth with 10.1.
I don't mean this in a disparaging way - FCPX is a tough go when you're coming from something else - but it might be worth viewing a couple of tutorials. I mean no offence.

Hey guys, I just wanted to mention a related issue in terms of audio which isn't necessarily what's going on in your case. FCPX seems to be very finicky when it comes to sample rates. This is especially relevant if you do a lot of doc work where you might get found footage or footage from non-ideal sources. If you do any reconforming of footage with weird framerates and end up with non-standard sample rates (something like 48.096 kHz), for example, you may have some problems. It will play fine in the timeline, but when you go to export a master, you may end up with loud static where that audio would play. I almost blew out a speaker with this! The other thing that I've seen is that the audio will simply be silent in the exported master.

If this is the case, you'll just have to re-export that particular audio to a standard sample rate, or sometimes I just do a batch of clips from Compressor if I know it will be a problem.

The strangest thing is that it will play absolutely fine in the timeline, so it's been my experience that whatever plays in the timeline will NOT necessarily be the same upon export. I'm guessing it's an issue with the way FCPX renders exports.

I plan on testing D800 and audio thing from a new project at some point.

I think there are a few issues that are going on when I had this problem:

1) The project I was working in before I imported the D800 footage was an xml import of an older project, that as I think about it, for learning purposes I may have changed something here and there.

2) The imported D800 video was converted from h.264 to Pro Res 422 48kHz using another program, PavTube. I had converted video to make it work in FCP 7. So maybe FCP X re-generates something in the process, even though the file is already PR 422. Not sure.

3) I have confirmed using Ronny's suggest that creating a new project in FCP X, copying clips from old time line to new time line makes things work.

4) I also realize that FCP X will base reject settings based on the first clip in the sequence.

Thanks for your help.
