Nested Time Code / Text issues

Hello,
I am having a n00b editing issue.
I have many really long days of footage
which I have made into separate compound clips

for example I sync'd my video with my audio and then made compound clips of the video (day1_Video)
the audio (day1_Audio)

but then I needed subtitles of everything
so I successfully imported all my subs using A. Edit and then I selected all those individual subs and called it day1_Subs.

Ok all is ok so far... 3 separate Compound clips

But for editing purposes I also wanted the days name (day1) and the fcpX timecode in the generators on each day so when I am cutting the fat from the day and then eventually editing scenes together I know exactly what day I am on and at exactly what time (as it will be "in sync" with the original file)

And this worked great as well
so now I have all the previous compound clips PLUS the day name and timecode in a separate compound clip...

still all is "ok"

but then when I duplicate the project,
trim the fat and want to use some of the selected shots in an edit I can't figure out how to do so AND NOT display the timecode (I am editing the trailer)... when I disable the day name and tc compound clip it disables all of them in all projects...

what do I do?

They are all linked to the Parent in the Event. Select on in a Timeline, go to the Clips menu, "Reference New Parent".

Ahh...
Thanks...

While I have your attention :P
is there anyway to duplicate projects that have many "nested" compound clips w/o the need for it to continually "re-background render" it seems like it is rending the already rendered way to much.

the way I have been working now is to have my "master sync'd" project with all of my footage, audio, subs, TimeCode, file name text together.

I then duplicate that "master sync'd" project and start cutting it up (I call it trimming the fat... deleting all the parts that are totally unusable) and when I see a shot that is really worth taking a longer look at I cut and copy that shot out of the large Compound clip that contains all the other compound clips and past that into the new project timeline (I call this my rough edit project)...

the problem is that every time I take this footage from one project to another it needs to render again.
and this takes a long time (even on my failry speedy machine... due to the fact that the days are so long)

any workflow suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

First, I'd strongly advise against nesting compounds inside of compounds too much. This has been known to cause problems. Also, doesn't seem to be an efficient workflow.

Next, renders are per timeline, not per clip.

What you may want to do is create a Project Snapshot, so that when you edit these Compounds, they don't reflect the edits back to the Project you just duplicated from. Remember, when you edit one Compound Clip, that edit is reflected in every instance of that Compound universally. Project Snapshots prevent this from happening.

Perhaps look at Secondary Storylines or something other than Compounds. I'm not very clear on your workflow.

Most editors I know turn Background Rendering off, as most of the time you don't need stuff rendered for simple playback.

all good / appreciated advice.
Thanks... I am unfamiliar with "snapshots" so I will look more into that as well.
and that is good to know that most turn off "background rendering" I didn't actually think of that ;)

thanks again!

Turning off the BG render has really made editing so much more streamlined and is far less buggy now. Thx!

One quick question on that subject...
now that BG render is off it will only render on export... correct?
or should one say do some rendering at night while asleep?

I guess I am asking with it off during edit, when is the best time to render?

Render time depends on how much you have going on. I'd say just enable rendering when you walk away for a few minutes. It shouldn't take that long. You can open up the status area to see the render progress.

As far as work flow goes, you might want to make better use of keywords, favorites and smart collections rather than chopping up the master clip into lots of little clips. You can use ranges and favorites instead. Renaming your favorites allows you to easily identify the clips and takes. One of the great strengths of FCPX is how flexible it is with metadata. Sticking to an FCP7 workflow really doesn't do justice to what you can accomplish with FCPX.
