What to do with transcoded media after editing?

Hi guys,
I'm editing an interview in fcpx 10.1, so I created a library in a thunderbolt drive and maintain my original files on other (usb 2.0) one. As my footage comes mainly from Canon DSLRs (H.264 mov) I decided to transcode everything to both optimized and proxy media. I work with proxy for the main editing, and then turn into optimized for color grading.
As far as I understand, the new behavior of fcpx is to put everything together inside the library: the projects, the events, the render files, AND the transcoded media (both proxy and optimized). So, for a one minute and a half interview, I'm getting a 380gb library file. Which I understand because the transcoded media is there.
But how can I delete all this media once the project is finished? I cannot enter to an optimized media folder as in previous versions. And what about render files?

Many thanks!
Pablo

To delete all of your transcoded media in FCP X 10.1, you can follow these steps...

To delete the render files in FCP X 10.1, you can delete this way...

- If you delete the render files for an Event, it deletes all of the render files for all of the projects within that Event.

Hi Pablo - there are a lot of new options in 10.1 for how media can be brought in that include referencing the files on external drives so that the Library has "pointers" to that drive or location. You might appreciate this tutorial as well:

Pretty clear. I saw a similar tutorial from Larry Jordan, but he didn't show this little trick of showing the package contents of libraries in finder, so that's why I didn't know how to access to transcoded media.
I will need to pay for a complete tutorial I guess

Many thanks,

I'll tell you this; media management is often the most uninteresting aspect of the process of editing and it's fun to work on a project that has great footage and a well done voiceover with solid direction, but being organized is not so exciting. It's very overlooked but of course, it's super important even though it's not fun.

Purchasing any tutorial set from Ripple is not only well spent money (usually not much either) but it also supports all the work they do to bring training to everyone that is free! I can't tell you how much I've gotten out of Mark Spencer's Motion training! A very solid purchase to say the very least. I should have done it a long time ago!

macProVideo has great video tutorials, also.

An alternative, if mucking around inside of a Library package is unnerving, is to copy the Project, or Event, to a new Library, and specify to NOT copy over the Optimized and Proxy files.

What Mac model / specs are you editing on? Because if you're on a T'bolt capable Mac, you should be able to edit with the original H.264 DSLR files just fine. If not, only use Proxies, and skip the Optimized, perhaps. Just thinking out loud.

Hi Ben,
that sounds as a good alternative also.

I'm on a macbook pro 17" i7 2.2 gghz, 16gb RAM, graphics HD 6750M 1024 MB
Maybe you are right and there is no point on getting the optimized, but I have all my media on usb 3.0 hard drives that my macbook recognize as 2.0, so working with h.264 with usb 2.0 device does not seem to be the best option when color grading/applying effects.

That's why I'm using the only thunderbolt drive I have (Lacie 2tb) for working on active projects.

Hi Pablo,

If you want to learn more about the new Library structure in 10.1 I absolutely advise you to read this extensive explanation written by Ben: www.macprovideo.com/hub/final-cut/fcp-x-...-to-libraries-part-1

It is very detailed, it comes in 2 parts, and it's free ;)

Gotcha! OK, I'd forget Optimized and Proxies altogether, and just use the original. Keep a copy of the originals on your USB drive. Copy them to the T'bolt for working with, but not into the Library! Keep them as External Media in their own folder. That way, when you're done, archive the Library, delete your originals folder on the T'bolt drive. You still have a copy of them on the USB drive. If you ever have to go back to that project, you'll set up that folder on the T'bolt again, and copy originals back to it. Easy. AND you save tons of drive space, keep the Library size way down, too.

Ben,
I need to give a try to that. I thought about doing it the first time, but I remembered that I've had several issues reconnecting media that has been moved between drives... Ok, that was on version 10.0.3, but I lost a complete project for doing that. And I'm not pretty sure about fcpx performance with original h.264 media, even from a thunderbolt device.
But you are the guru here, so I'll try it.

Many thanks!

I've used the first LaCie T'bolt 2TB drive with the first MBP that supported T'bolt. And DLSR H.264 clips performed really nicely. That's what I'm basing the suggestion on.

That said, if you do heavy compositing, tons of effects, then that will create demands on your CPU. But I think the MBP's CPU you have should be good otherwise.

Try it out, if it doesn't work, then we've learned a valuable lesson, and are all much smarter for it.

"Try it, you'll like it!" (lord, I'm dating myself with that one)

You can do it manually as noted. Or, just get X-Wiper.

itunes.apple.com/us/app/x-wiper/id761443...mt=12&ign-mpt=uo%3D4

Really nice little app.

Can't sleep? Try this: fcpxpert.net ;-)
