Hello guys, looking for help on how to speed up and slow down footage and reverse footage. Here is an example of what kind of editing I need to do in FCP x. Link below:

vimeo.com/75259949

I am editing slow motion footage shot at 240fps, very high speed slow motion footage. I need to edit the video like the link shown above. I need the fast short cut and fast and best way to speed up and slow down footage and reverse footage. Can this all be done in FCP x? or would I need to a 3rd party plugin? Most people say use Premiere or anything else but FCP X. But I am a die hard user for FCP X and i think i can get it done. What i need to know also is how to just select a part of the clip in the timeline and tell that part of the clip to go fast or slow, or reverse a certain part of the clip. Can anyone tell me how I can get this done in a fast work flow? Thanks again any input will be greatly appreciated!

Super mega easy and fast inside FCP X, no need for anything else. We call is retiming.
Here's the user manual page:
help.apple.com/finalcutpro/mac/10.1/#ver15f86b6a

Here is an article about it:
www.macprovideo.com/hub/final-cut/fcp-x-...oring-retiming-tools

Basically, create a 24fps Project timeline.
Shoot 60fps (or faster, as you seem to have) and drop it in the 24fps Project.
Select it and use the Option-C to use every original frame of the clip in the timeline. This is the smoothest slo-mo possible. Adjust as desired.

To revers, select the clip, go to the Retiming shortcut menu in the toolbar, select Reverse Clip.

Could you please advice with the following?
Assume I'm shooting in 50p preliminary knowing that my timeline will be set to 25p in project. So, I'm shooting to get the natural slow motion effect of 50%. The question is: if I'd like to use a ONE clip with fast moving object, like a snowboard jump, and want to capture the ride before jump in NORMAL speed and later on to slow only some part of a video (with this 50% Conforming) and then landing in normal speed again! So should I still shoot in 50p and import it as it is in the timeline and slow only some part of a video, but those parts which are ride before jump and lending will be with twice less frames, coz they are 50p in 25p timeline. Is it some other way to do it? Thank you in advance'

I believe you would do this by using the "Speed Ramp" in the Retiming menu. Larry Jordon just had a great webinar on this very subject a few days ago. I'm not sure if that is up and running on his web site, and you may have to subscribe. Well worth it.

Use the range tool then select from the retime tool popup menu to only apply effect to the range.

Yeah i got it! Just the point here is in 50p/25p solution. Not the matter how to do it, but whether 50p clip in 25p timeline in time of normal speed will look CHOPPY or not. In 50% speed it'll have the same amount of fps without throwing out pixels.

To understand what I'm talking about here is an example.

Don't worry, your 50fps footage will look great in a 25fps timeline. After dropping it in the project, the footage will play at normal speed. You can then use the range tool and retime certain parts to 50% speed. If sou want to go even slower, you might encounter choppiness or artefacts. Turn retime-video-quality to optical flow for best results if going under 50%.

Happy retiming!

Thank you a lot! the stuff with optical flow works great here.

How about ramping the speed up and down? I know FCP7 had a function similar to this but I could never get it to work right. Going normal speed and abruptly to slow-mo seems too jarring, and I like to ramp up and down a little if possible. I have tried in the past having a few intermediate frames running at, say 75% between the 100% and 50% speeds but even that seems weird.

Ramping speed is mega simple. Speed transitions which appear between speed segments of a clip. Speed Blade a clip. Set one side to 25%. You'll see a gray area overlapping the two. Adjust by dragging the edges of that gray area on either side.
