Compound Clip Dilema

I recently picked back up on editing a feature film I haven't worked on in over 6months. It is around an hour long. It takes for ever to load and crashes here and there. But the most annoying part is when i am working in the edit, the spinning ball will just come up and make me wait, but there's no rhyme or reason. I've read about the compound clips being an issue. Is it worth me using the "Break Apart Clip" command?
I recently updated to FCPX 10.1 hoping this would speed things up.
Running Macbook Pro 2011, 16gb ram with project on Seagate Thunderbolt 3tb drive. Do i need a faster raid drive?

Since 10.0.6 compound clips are not really problematic anymore. To better understand where the problem can be it would be helpful if you gave some more information about this project:
1. What is the format of the video you are working with? Are you working with Optimized or with native media?
2. Are all your media for this feature stored inside one Event? How large is this Event? (approx. number of clips inside it, or total size in GB of your Library).
3. Are you applying a lot of filters to your clips (third party color corrections or effects), or a lot of titles?
4. Are you using any oversized stills in this feature?

1. Footage is 1080p canon mov files. Proxy seems to have the same spinning ball issue. I have not rendered Optimized due to the amount of space it would take. Switching between original and proxy takes about 5 min which is about half as long as it does to open the project (10min).
2. There are 46 events. I did the event per daily. They average around 25gb each. The Whole library for this project is 766gb and it is the only one open.
3. The last time i worked on it (+ 6months ago) i added a bunch of greenscreen keys using the native keyer. I only added them to help visualize. The final keying will be done by the folks doing the VFX and I will just import final videos. The movie is about 60-75% greenscreen. I actually need to remove all the temporary keys so we can see what VFX need to be done. So that should be my next task. There were quite a few shots that I used the Audition feature on also.
4. No oversized stills.
After updating to 10.1 and updating the project, I deleted all the render files from the project. I think it helped a little. This was something I found on this site .
No that you mention the filters (keys), that is probably a big part of it. Closing the browser seems too help a bit too. It just seems so random when the spinning ball comes up.
