Running FCS 7 and X simultaneously.

Can this be done without breaking something? I'd like to reference some old sequences for clip timing in 7 and then switch over to X to update a converted project.

Create a second user to run FCP

If you already have 7 installed, and install X, the X installer will move the old version 7 apps into a folder called Final Cut Studio, inside of the Applications folder, automatically.

BTW, just out of curiosity, what do you mean by "clip timing"?

Maybe I misunderstood the word "simultaneously".

So install both versions on one drive follow Ben's instructions.

With one user you can run either FCP or FCPX - and they share some prefs.
With a second user you can run both "simultaneously" – means at the same time – with user switching and they don't share prefs.

Thanks all. Before installing X. I had 7 installed. As mentioned, the X installer moved all older apps to another folder.

I understand about the new user account and that X and 7 may share some prefs, so does that mean if I have X open and I go to launch 7. I'd get some sort of message like "Could not launch xxxxx because...."

With one user you can run either X or 7.
Trying to run both at a time will give you an error message.

Having two users like Jon1 and Jon2 with fast user switching enabled allows to run both apps at a time - though each as different user.

Thanks Andreas. I create a new user account and see how things go with that.

Ben, by clip timing I mean getting the clip time from properties of each clip in my old 7 sequence so I can match up the exact time of clip in X.

Still not following what "clip time" you get in 7 that you can't get in X.
Or are you trying to recreate an existing sequence edit in 7, in X?
Then I'd get the 7toX app.

If it's only about timing 7toX definitively will do the job.

Thanks Ben and Andreas. I've been trying out 7 to X and yes, you are correct I can get the time info from the clips in X.

Converting an entire film that I made in 7 to X is going to be a huge undertaking since a lot of my stuff uses freeze frames that I now have to convert to photo files, weird filter settings in 7 that are no longer supported by X, and a few plug-ins that are also not supported.

In addition, all my fonts revert back to some default and need to be completely repositioned manual.

And lastly my layered Photoshop files are missing layers.

It just seems like I might as well start over, or better yet, just leave them alone and hope that support for 7 lasts longer than I do

it seems that converting your 7 project to x is really a big undertaking.

one thing you try is to download my titleexchange. the tool set includes a free app called grender.
this can be used to render all the text stuff to stills with an edl. the edl can be used to be imported into fcp7 and from there (using 7to x) to exactly the same text as still to x.

You could select the time range of each of the shots that have the freeze frames and speed changes and treat them as effect shots by rendering them out as prores clips by setting the range, then lay them on top of the work underneath. That way if you don't have to change anything great, if you do, you still have all the elements on the lower 'track' handy to reconstruct the effect and the prores clip as a reference. (ok I know FCPX doesn't use tracks :)

This is the way I've had to export complicated timelines to Resolve from 7.
