SSD Question: OWC vs Crucial for Tower Upgrade

Looking to beef up my 2009 dual quad core tower (before my new Mac Pro arrives). Was going to install an OWC 480 gb SSD as my main boot drive. But the the Crucial M500 960 GB caught my eye. Not much more expensive and a lot more space.

Has anyone used one? Problems? Issues? Recommendation?

Thanks as always.

I did the same with my 2009 MP but since the internal bus for hard drives is SATA II and not III, you'll not get lightning fast performance!

I would get an OWC Mercury Accelsior PCI express SSD ( eshop.macsales.com/shop/SSD/PCIe/OWC/Mercury_Accelsior/RAID )
and you'll also get two "extra" esata external ports !

I have an OWC 120GB SSD for my boot drive and it's very fast. Considering it's the old MacPro with all the space for internal drives you probably don't need to get the huge SSD since the most notable difference in speed comes from running the OS and programs off the SSD.

What else would you be using that drive for? From my perspective it just seems like overkill.

Well, I took the plunge and got the 960 GB Crucial SSD from Amazon. It wasn't that much more than the 480GB OWC model--and I just didn't want to go through the hassle of pruning my current HD from 550+ GB down to 430 GB (need headroom on any drive).

In any case, used an adapter from OWC, Carbon Copy Cloner and--works like a charm. Definite performance enhancement. Now getting 260 read/write on Black Magic Speed test. Boots about 60% faster, apps launch faster, FCPX much peppier. So far so good...
