I only need certain parts from the footage I've imported. Will most likely be out of space on my iMac if I can't jettison what I don't need. Is there a way to do it within FCP 10.1?

You can trim your original clips when you import and only import the selections you have made. But once your footage is imported you cannot trim the imported media anymore.
