I'm thinking of buying a new 21.5 iMac (2.7GHz Intel 4th generation Core i5 processor, 8GB RAM, Intel Iris Pro graphics) and I need to know if it will run FCP X effectively. Can anyone advise me?

Scan this thread for some insight. Don't be intimidated by the volume of posts...it's a running post of benchmarks from forum members with various hardware configs.

OK, so I had looked over that thread before, but I don't see a clear cut answer to my question. Will the new 2.7GHz iMac with Intel Iris Pro graphics and 8GB RAM run FCPX effectively, or will I need to move up to the 2.9GHz iMac with NVidia GT650M graphics and which also has 1GB of video RAM?

I guess the clear cut answer is yes. But it's all so subjective because every situation is different. Overall budget, production capacity needed, external HDs, RAID(s) as added peripherals, your source media format, and more all make a difference in how pleased you may be with a new editing setup.
If you look on page 3 of the link I gave above, there are a couple test results fro 21.5" iMacs. Compare them to older MBPros some of us are using and you'll see your choice is compelling. Compare to the new 27" iMac hardware, beefed up older Mac Pros and your choice isn't as compelling.
Hands down, no matter what, discrete GPU upgrade is better at any entry point IMHO.
