Converting version 7 projects to 10.1... was created by Jonathan Levin
I am going to be practicing editing with a short project I created in fcp 7. I'll back that up of coarse before doing anything.
Is 7 to X still the best (only) way to do this properly? Any gothchYuhs?
I've heard some transitions don't transfer well. True?
Thanks and happy new year!

I've using it just yesterday. Works well. But as usual, you have to check & redo some things like animations, filters, maybe speed variations, etc... Beware if you have clips with differents frame rate than your timeline. FcpX handles them differently than Fcp7 (or I've done something wrong maybe ?).
Don't forget to export your fcp7 timeline before translating to fcpX, it'll help correct the mistakes.

Today I tried to convert my first video from version 7 to 10.
My first question would: is it necessary to render a project in FCP 7 before exporting the XML from 7 to 10 Converter? In the interest of saving disk space, I deleted all of my old render files, and re-rendering would take some time.
When I converted my first FCP 7 project, I noticed that all my freeze frames show up as black frames in 10.1. I read somewhere that I need to convert the freeze frames to photos(?) first, and then reimport them somehow into version 10 project.
None of my affects i.e. color corrections, film grain filter, cartoon filter (NuBlue?) transferred.
Am I wrong in thinking maybe the best way to handle all this is to export a full res QT files from the old FCP 7 and just archive those! Seems like an awful lot of work.

No need rendering.
As i told you, you have to redo all effects, filters, animations, etc...
That's why I use a full res QT to check my translated timeline. And then, if the effects & co are too difficult to redo (or I don't have time), I use the full res QT to replace them (if possible).
Converting fcp7 project to FcpX are easy but take some times
If you don't need it, don't do it.
