10.1 and Nikon D800 video. was created by Jonathan Levin
Greetings.
I am now at a point where I think I can switch to 10.1 from version 7. Plus I have some time between projects to learn a bit.
My first question is about importing video shot on a Nikon D800. With the older FC 7, I would use A converter (Pavtube) to convert the video from the camera to Pro Res. Well aware of the problems editing H.264 in 7
With FC X, is it still necessary to convert the video first (Pavtube) and then import it into a fcp x library?
Or can you just hook up a card reader and import using the settings given in the fcp x dialog?
How would you handle this situation?
Thanks and glad to be a part of this forum.

I don't have experience with the Nikon D800 specifically, but I've used video from other cameras that use H.264 with no issues. Assuming your camera generates a standard H.264/MPEG-4 AVC file, FCPX should be able to transcode it internally.
Not only do you not need a separate program to transcode, you'll love the fact that in FCPX, you don't even have to wait for the import to be done; you can start editing or logging right away.
Good luck with your transition to the new platform. I'm sure there will be some frustrating moments during the learning curve, but you'll be better for it in the long run.

I've edited lots of D800 (and 5D3) footage in FCPX and it's been no problem at all. Of course, once it's in FCPX you have the 'option' of generating proxy and/or optimised media within the app if for amy reason you're needing it, something that just wasn't there in 7, so you had to do it all up front.
