Backing up to iCloud was created by wdevn
After reading the thread about how to backup FCPX 10.1 Libraries to Dropbox I thought why not backup to iCloud? So I stated doing some directory hunting and came up with a way to backup to iCloud. The new Final Cut Pro X 10.1 has a backup library feature that can be setup to store copies of your Libraries at the location of your choice. Many FCPX editors have started using Dropbox to store and their Libraries that connect to external media. Why hasn't Apple built their iCloud service into FCPX 10.1?
Many Apple apps happily use iCloud to store and share documents so why not have FCPX 10.1 do the same? It can be done simplify by setting up iCloud in a way that can have it act just like the old iDisk used to. In this way, editors can create and delete iCloud directories just as they were local disk locations. If you enabled the iCloud service on your Mac, you would be directly connected to your iCloud directories for the different iWorks apps you as currently using.
Open Finder and press the Go tab and the Option key. You will see the Library selection show up. Open the, now displayed, Library link and find the Mobile Documents folder. Open the Mobile Documents folder. If you look in this folder, you will see directories that were created by the iWork apps that you use.
In this location, you will see directories created by the domain and name of the app that created it.
.....
com~domain~appname
com~domain~Pages
.....
In my case, I created a directory called FCPX Library Backups under the directory created by my TextEdit app ( com~domain~TextEdit ). After creating this directory I right clicked on the directory and selected "Make Alias" from the list in the pop-up menu. Then I took off the word "alias" at the end of this link and moved it the the Favorite section of my Finder. FCPX 10.1 can now be setup to place backup Libraries that link to external media in this location.
I have been using this setup for a few days over my network without any problems. I don't have to think about transferring the Libraries between my computers. It just works.
Using this method can even be used as not only a location to save backups but also be used to transfer Motion templates and other related files to other computers.
Note: I don't think it would be a good idea to try to backup managed Libraries that have media in it. They would be too large.
Please let me know what you think about this way of backing up Libraries that connect to external media.
