Hello folks. I am the resident newbie. I have be toying around with final cut pro X for a while now and I have to say that I will never go back to anything else. Its a bit expensive and over kill for a hobbits like me like whose projects are not that complicated bit I love it anyway. Now on to business.
I'm running on your typical 8 core Mac Pro 3.1 with a single 5770 graphics card and 32 gigs of ram.
all I can read tells me that the new 10.1 update will make use of both GPU's in the new Mac Pro.
My question is whether or not this new feature is specific to the new GPU's or will 10.1 make use of a second 5770 in my current Mac.

I'm also currently running on a 3,1 with a 5770 and honestly most of the time things work very well as it is. If you try to work with esoteric native media then things can slow down a little here and there, but the vast majority of the time it works fine as-is. If it's slowing down for you then create optimised media instead.
I'm editing commercial projects with as many as 8 cameras in multi cam, and the 3,1 still works well. Would I like the new MacPro? Of course!
However, check out the posts on this page:

You'll see someone popping in a second GPU and re-doing the speed test, with quite an improvement….

Keep in mind that test was done on a 2006 Mac Pro 1,1! He did some Han Solo "special modifications" that got the performance up to that of a maxed out early 2011 iMac. Not bad at all.
It doesn't make sense to me that Apple would intentionally disable dual GPU support in FCP X on older mac pros. They take a lot of pride in how long their hardware remains useful.
Certain cards are more power efficient. That along with not having all the hard drive bays full and minimal pci cards should be more than safe to run two GPUs on a 3,1 mac pro.
