Nor had FCP been running long enough to create a back up.
After looking into how FCP stores The new Library files etc I hit on this idea.
During the install process a folder had been created with all my old projects and events in it.
I decided to try returning my files to the state they were in before FCPX updated.( I removed the new library files, then I put copies of the Old FCP events and Old FCP projects folders into my " movies Folder.
I the loaded up FCP and got it to scan my hard drive and it went through the updating process of all my old projects again and created new libraries. Everything now appeared and I carefully created a new Library structure as per some of the Ripple training guys suggestions.

OPTION 1: Use 10.1 and find the Library it created for your project. This should appear by default in the Event browser of FCPX provided you did not CLOSE the library. If you did close it, choose from the menu, FILE - Open Library and see if you can locate it there. Note that your projects under FCPX 10.1 are now located inside the Events (which all reside in the Library). Any drive that you had connected during the update process that contained Final Cut Events and Final Cut Projects folders (with actual projects and events in them) got automatically converted to Libraries sorted by the drive volume.
OPTION 2: If you have a backup copy of a previous version of FCPX (10.0.9 or earlier) you can re-install that in place of the 10.1 version. The new 10.1 version made hard links to your events and projects and placed them in folders with the naming convention OLD Final Cut Events (etc.). Create folders named Final Cut Events and Final Cut Projects wherever you had them before the update and copy or move the data from the OLD Final...etc. folders to these new folders. When you start your previous version of FCPX you should be able to salvage your projects, or at least relink the media.
In the future, do not allow your Mac to update your applications automatically. Auto updating of the OS is fine, but I prefer to be in control of all updates to my system.
Hope this helps.
UPDATE: corrected "media browser" to Event Browser" above.

Under 10.9 these used to be in two separate files my my " user movies folder" So I reinstated them there , then having used finder to remove the new libraries created by FCP 10.1 , when I restarted FCP I allowed it to scan my drives again and convert my projects and everything appeared ok this time. ( I still kept copies of my old data again too...just in case.
Your problem my be different to mine and dgwvideo's option 2 maybe best for you if you can do that ( I could not )
Key thing is find the folder where 10.1 put your old data...... I found a tutorial video on You tube which explains how the whole library structure worked and how you could restore corrupt events etc. ( before 10.1) this helped me figure out what was going on , as FCP is just a database.
Good luck, and goodnight from the Uk, happy Christmas!

But now I have a new hard drive. Have formatted it in Mac OS extended(journaled). It doesn't show... no matter what I do. Reboot, restart, disconnect. Nothing!

I use a usb3 drive for storing most of my media which works fine. Once you have created a library in FCP 10.1 I find you can access it by "right " clicking the FCP icon ( sorry I am an ex PC convert) and choosing the one I want or I can use the file drop down menu menu in FCP itself if it's already open , all my libraries on whatever drive ate listed there.

My hard drive shows in Finder, but not in FCXP(under library). I took your advice and added a new library. But I had to give my hard drive a name even though I gave it a name when formatting it. In the previous version of FCPX the hard drive popped up when I plugged the hard drive in the usb. And I'm using USB3.
And every time I insert a hard drive I have to open it through Finder in order for it to show in FCPX.

All Libraries don't show up automatically when you launch FCP X, like Events and Projects used to. Only the ones that you had opened when FCP X was last quit.
Go to the File menu, Open Library, and to Other, and then Locate.
It is now called (officially) the Libraries pane, not the Event Library.
Libraries don't sort according to DATE, just alphabetically as Libraries. They don't show what drive they are on explicitly (mouse over for a tool tip with the path). The only controls for sorting by date and such are for the Browser.
Of course I'm going to recommend reading my free two part article at macProVideo about Libraries, too. Duh...

Rethink how you structure media management. Things that need to be hidden should now be Projects.
And, you can always Consolidate an Event to another location for archiving, then delete it in your Library.

I produce all the video for a local hockey team so that library is called " hockey team" for example. Inside that library I have roughly 25 events with each event being home game 1, home game 2, coach interviews, etc. (footage from the unique day of filming). One event = one day = one camera card reel. Each event is roughly 30 to 50 GB of footage.
Also in that same library are all the projects for that client (TV commercials, recruitment videos, highlight reels, theater ads, etc.). Small documentaries use clips from several of the events, game highlights use clips from just that game, action reels use clips from a few of the events, and so on
So, when I am editing a game highlight reel that uses just one event, disabling (not moving out of the library) all the other events not needed would reduce screen clutter, maybe system resources, etc. This is what I am referring to.
Can you advise your recommended structure for this situation. I would like to keep all client material together, just don't always need every bit if it.

Also remember that Projects can have keywords now, and you can do a Smart Search for Projects. There's more organizational options.
Point is, you now have MORE organizational options, but you can't hide Events. In speaking with Philip Hodgetts, hiding Events now that they are inside of a Library database, would be a nightmare, and potential disasters could happen. Thus, re-think what an Event is. It is not what it used to be. Libraries are the top level now. So we need to adapt. Brainstorming things is what a lot of editors are doing, and some of my local FCP X editors are coming up with very interesting ways to work with Libraries.
I worked with a local school many years ago on a similar project for a team. Even in FCP 4.5, I was selecting my best shots for each event, and placing them in a collection (an FCP 4.5 project) of Stock Footage. Then when I was done with a Project, I didn't need to keep everything, just my Stock Footage. I had that stuff in a Project (FCP 4.5 project) by itself, and trashed stuff I'd never use again as I went on. Every situation is different.
I'm hoping we can have Folders to put Events into soon, that would be really helpful.
