Sorry but that is simply not a reason that makes any sense. If it was impossible under every single circumstance, that in every single case, it was impossible for Apple Inc products to play AVI, then the reason would be valid.

What is the cost of FCP X to do with it? Apple does not sell any decent hardware capable of running FCP X for less than $300, so what if it costs $400 or even $500...If I could buy a plug in from Apple for $20 I would try and save up for it,

It is simply we as the consumer/user of FCP X are "happy" to accept this as normal...AVI is old outdated inferior and is no longer a viable valid technology, long past it commercial user pays for it date.

Sorry the reason of royalties is simply not good enough, there is another reason, akinn to Steve Job's world of hurt...blue-ray..

It is simply not good enough of a professional system not to support legacy file formats..

Thanks to the wonderful folks at Wikipedia, it turns out that Bill Gates got miffed, and withdrew support and access to Apple for the AVI, as a result of this, Apple was forced to support alternate technology, called Quicktime.

It was not about royalties, but 2 companies fighting over something that happened almost 30 years ago...Time for a few people to grow up and accept that the past is the past, AVI is so old it has mould on, do what is in the best interest of the consumer..

It is clear that for legal reasons, Apple is not for the foreseeable future going to be in a position to support AVI natively, as a result I will need to find a transcoder that works in the Mavericks OS.

Thank you for all the assistance and the tips, this post will be my last on this topic, I now regard this topic as finalized and not subject to further input.

And if anyone with even the slightest bit of acumen needs to convert to fcpx compatible codecs, ffmpeg will do almost anything. Handbrake is an excellent GUI for using it to transcode to h264.

Justine,

Well I AM going to add my final reply to this thread, just to get some things straightened out.

Sorry for sounding harsh, but do you ever really listen to the advice people are giving you? Every single question you post here seems to end with a rant that doesn't lead to anything.

Someone gave you a file in a proprietary format, or you have downloaded some weird file from the internet, and you cannot open it on your system. No sweat, this can happen any day to anyone working with any video software on any given platform. Neither Apple nor Microsoft nor anyone else can be blamed for this: proprietary formats do exist, so learn to live with this fact and deal with it. I can immediately send you a still in a format that Photoshop won't be able to open even though it used to be a popular stills format. Do I start ranting against Adobe for this? No, I just convert the file and get done with it.

People on this forum are giving their personal time helping others, so I for one would appreciate not having to waste my time reading through unfounded rants. In fact this is the first personal rant I have ever posted on a forum in the past seven years and I surely hope it will be the last one, so happy X-mas to you all :)

- Ronny

I second the above. This forum bends over backward to help beginners, which is very much appreciated. This brand of nonsense is not only a waste of time but destructive to goodwill on the forum. Merry Christmas to you too Ronny, thanks for all your help over the year.

FCP X supports real time native support for Red footage and many other currently used very robust camera formats. Try to think of the glass as 99/100th full.

It seems as if 99/100 full is experienced as 99/100 empty on the other side of the equator ;-)

I'm from New Zealand and am pretty positive about fcpx. Twits unfortunately are universal.

FCP supports any QuickTime-compatible video format. If you want to edit AVI in FCP, you should convert avi to mov which are best supported in QuickTime. If your AVI is encoded with Motion JPEG (M-JPEG), you can use QuickTime to do the conversion..If your AVI is encoded with other codec, you may try QuickTime Pro or a third party to convert AVI to MOV
