Can we do this "premiere-workflow" in FCPX?

Hi!

First of all, happy holidays to all and thanks for a MASSIVE resource in FCPx !!

Second, I've got a question :)

We switched from FCP7 to Premiere and FCPx 10.1 made us want to check out FCPx again.

In Premiere, our sound-workflow is so that we have the video and audio in Premiere and for editing the sound, we just click "edit in Audition". This opens the audio in Audition where we can edit it and when closing Audition, we're back in Premiere with the edited sound.

Is this workflow possible in FCPx and Logic Pro X or we we really need to export manually with xml etc?

Thanks in advance for any replies and thoughts on this :)

Hi Kenneth, and welcome to the forum.

At this time exporting an XML to Logic is the best way to go, so no one-click "send-to-Logic" yet. But seeing how much the latest version of Logic X has been improved specifically with video and FCPX compatibility in mind, I think we're only a few steps away from one-click integration between the apps.

In the meantime the XML route seems to work properly now, it provides a fast and easy way for transferring an entire FCPX project into Logic and accessing its really high-end audio tools.

FCPX is indeed moving on, it's really worth keeping an eye on.

There is also the possibility to export FCPX audio to pro-tools using a plugin called X2pro: www.x2pro.net/

I only used Protools in the studio and never at home(where i use logic). I think as Ronny mentioned that Logic X and FCPX are a great couple and will get married soon, although not in 'Vegas' ;-)
For now you can use XML for X to logic though I can't say if complex projects transfer nicely already.

Thank you very much :)

We don't DO that much editing in the audio as we A ) have very consistant voice over recordings and B ) also because our philosofy is to record the sound as "finished" as possible, so often times we even don't edit the audio.

We're doing the most popular daily techshows in Denmark, and with only 3 colleagues, we have to be very fast to produce the amount of content we do :)

If you like, pop by Living Smart TV - it's in danish, though :)

Nice looking shows!

If you're not doing much audio editing I think logic X should be fine for when the audio tools in FCPX aren't enough. (which probably happens pretty quickly) I think there will be more for audio in FCPX in the future but we can never say when as Apple can be quite predictable in their unpredictability :-)

How much video's do you guys create in a week?

Thank you :)

We do a daily show of 20 min. technews (Called "Goodmorning Gadget") and the 2-3 other shows, depending on what's in focus. That would be unboxings, reviews, tutorials etc. but also more and more live coverage of tradeshows like CES, IFA, Apple Keynotes etc.

Last week we made 27 shows, but that was also because we wanted to produce a little ahead into the christmas days so we could take a few days off :)

2014 will be vey exciting for us, as our main competing show just closed down, so we're welcoming A LOT of new viewers and also we're building a real studio instead of the "fake" greenscreen studio we use now !

Also, we're going towards producing 10 short news stories each day (1-2 min. pr. video) so we're really in love with the "no (sur)render" approach of the new MacPro and FCP where it seems we can save, literally, hours of work each day, right?

wow, all that with a crew of 3?? Respect!

I should think that the new Mac Pro will definitely save you guys the time you need. In fact, I'd think with 6 thunderbolt ports you could plugin your cameras directly using ultra studio mini recorders... Or other BMD devices

Actually, right now we're switching between cameras using a Tricaster 455........ which cost the same as 3-4 new MacPros, so you might have a point there...... :)

Is it possible to record 3 cameras right into each their "track" in fcpx live using the BlackMagic "boxes" you mention?

:-) yeah, I wanna start doing live streaming lessons and I'm going to use 3 cam's (gh3) + wirecast + ultrastudio mini recorders. I just hope the BMD hardware will work, it should but you never know (I've been to their forum quite a few times :-)

sorry, didn't catch the question in the end: what you could do is use media express. You'd have to (or you could) copy the software 3 times and then run 3 copies of the software at the same time.
Wirecast lets you do that too but I've understood from some that the image will be a bit softer. I don't know about recording straight into FCPX, I guess that should be possible but the question is: is it?

Sorry for all the replies but here's a thought:

you could use hyperdeck shuttle's in combination with 3 ultra studio mini recorders + wirecast. You would do the stream with the software and incoming video from the recorders but use the hyperdecks to record the video directly from the camera's to standard ssd's.

Using the BMD multi-dock you can edit straight off the SSD's, no transcoding, nothing, super fast. ( www.blackmagicdesign.com/nl/products/blackmagicmultidock )

Another way would be using those multiple instances of Media express and record the streams to a RAID. ( the multi dock can be configured as RAID too making it super fast as you're using SSD's)

I did read some place that the hyperdecks don't accept all ssd's so an inquiry at BMD would be smart.
disclaimer: I'm not affiliated to BMD and all info is just things I've learned when I was looking for solutions to my own problems. I'm also not a pro like some people around here, just an enthusiast

by the way, recording time on SSD's is limited of course so this might work depending on how long it takes to record a show and how large those SSD's are but I'm confident you'd be able to do things a bit cheaper&faster.
