Is the best way to archive a project by simply making a copy of the .fcpbundle now?

Only if the package contains the media.

Yes, mine does, but it's also part of an updated project from 10.0.9. I was going to include the "Updated Projects" folder but it just looks like a bunch of aliases. I just want to make sure I have the project file and the event file included... but I know that's how it works now, having them in the .fcpbundle. Just can't see it. In burning this to blu-ray for archiving I hope this would fit on 6 disks, but not sure if splitting it would make it unusable on trying to reimport. I've already deleted render items and transcoded files.

You can't really spilt the package I don't think, not be able to put it together again.
Right-click on the library in the Finder and go inside and see if the original media is actually there or if you only have symlinks.

You can burn disk images using spanned disks in toast. There are rar/par apps as well that allow you to split large files into pieces with an error buffer.
I've been playing with the "Consolidate Event/Project Files" feature, and so far it's working great at gathering everything up.
