I have always had problems with distributed transcoding in compressor. With the new version I have three instances selected in the prefs but compressor is only doing one instance once I submit a job for the single computer. I've tried many things to get it to work to no avail.
The funny thing is if I link another computer the distribution will make more than one instance, 4 of them at a time.

I was wondering about that also. The compressor manual suggests starting with the maximum number of instances (5 on my Mac Pro) and if performance is sluggish due to processor bogging down then reduce the number to find a suitable performance level. It also says to test this by submitting a number of small batches and monitor the process with activity monitor. I haven't tested this yet but it is on the list of things to do.
