How can I transition between these two clips?

Final Cut Pro X is very picky about what it will let me apply a transition to for some lame reason.

I am trying to apply a transition between these two clips:

They are not on the primary timeline but they are right next to each other. They are touching. If they could spread VD they would spread it to each other because they are so close. But FCPX won't allow me to apply a transition here even though going by what I see, I should be able to. They are on the same level. Instead, I can only apply a transition to the beginning of one or the end of the other. Does FCPX expect me to extend the edges of both and apply two transitions? That would be extremely counter intuitive.

I just want to be able to deal with transitions as easily as I can in FCP7. This is not the case.

Those two clips are not on the same storyline. (they each have their own black plate behind them) Possibly because you used a blade-all tool and cut the storyline. Delete the second clip, drag it back to the same spot, and it should extend the storyline of the first clip. Then you will be able to do a transition between them.

Actually it's easier to drag the second storyline onto the first one. That way there's no deleting and none of the stuff that goes with it.

Anyway, thanks!

Select both secondary storylines at once (not the clips themselves), go to the Clip menu, "Create Storyline", they'll be put together in one storyline.
