Hi FCP community.
Long time lurker, but first time poster, so pls be gentle.

I got two questions which are bothering me since yesterday

1) All tutorials have about 4-5 projects within library, but how do you search your libraries from Finder or from FCP if you have hundreds of projects? I do work on about 60+ small promos each month (+130 different aspects ratio versions) and when I wanted to search for job I have created year ago, I always searched for a name in a Finder and no matter how many drives you have hooked in, your search results showed you where your Events/projects for that project are located-you knew immediately where to locate that project and you simply dragged and drop that folder to your MOVIE > FCP Projects/Events folder and then it immediately showed up IN FCP after you have opened it.

Now, that your project names are buried within package content of the Library, that search from Finder is gone and I hope I am mistaken, but the only way you can do the search for your projects within Library is that you need to open FCP and visually scroll the names - as you can search for events only, not for projects. Or is there finally a Project search anywhere? Am I missing something?

2) When you upgrade your old Projects to the new Library structure, your Projects/Events folders are kept within the Library folder. Is it have to be that way? I would prefer to get rid of these folders as well and have all those .mov files etc, moved into the Library so I no longer need to deal with the old name folders.

When you move the files to trash and empty my trash - are the files being copied to the Libraries or deleted for good? Or how to initiate the copy process?

I dig that you Projects names are now supporting more characters per line, then in the previous version did,
so you can finally read the full name of your longer name project and not some shorter version in the list view, hover for me the search function is absolutely essential.

Sorry for the long post!
Cheers,
Mike

in FCP if you use the search function Cmd-F. Under Type there is a file type called Project. That will filter the library to only show projects. If the library is selected, it will show all the projects in all the events. You can also add text so it will filter for projects with that text string so all the Client A projects for instance.

Thank you Tom.

Will give it a try.

However, you think that we are not able to search for project names from Finder?
That alone - for me - is bad news.

No way to do it in the Finder. The projects are embedded in the library packages.

Hi Tom,
I did checked the search as you recommend, but it looks like you have to select Library first. So lets say I have 10 Libraries with 100 project each - I would have to click each of the Library separately and start the search in each of them.

I thought there is one search for all connected libraries - this way the structure is far from user friendly.

If you can't search for names of projects from Finder and you are limited for a search within the app and only if you selected Library . . .ufff

Happy Holiday and thank you for your help.

I wish there is a more "normal" way how to find your projects.
..lets say from the app or from the Finder

I think having to search multiple libraries for hundreds of projects is not realistic. I'd have some more well thought out structure for what goes where. If they're that related, put them in one Library. Use Events, keywords, and folders to organize them.

I agree with Ben.
It's unfortunate that this release has messed up your organizational paradigm.

I would look at it like an opportunity to get more organized, and create folder directories that make sense for your workflow.

Absolutely. I do agree and despite my rant I definitely looking forward to make it work for me,
maybe its just that I am dragged back time to time with projects I did in the past.

I am happy with the naming possibilities etc.
however I am just surprised the search is not there - at least it could tell "hey I am here, in this or that library"

Thank you everyone taking time to read and reply.

Appreciate it.

Best,
Mike
