Can't get my Large Projects to update

Trying to upgrade to 10.1 here...is anyone else having trouble updating large projects?

My Events are updating without any trouble but my projects (the large ones - 30/40 minutes in length hang FCPX 10.1

The Updating "Movies" library dialog quickly races up to about 98% on the progress bar but then just hangs there. FCPX does not become unresponsive but after a full 3 hours there was no progress.

After that I tried to boot FCPX and it crashed. The only way to get it to launch without crashing was to restart.

Any clues or suggestions?

In addition to the above...I am going through the projects one by one to salvage what I can. I started the whole process again and freshly updated the Event together with one small project. I found that project - after updating - in the main Event the project was referencing in 10.0.9. All good.

Since then I have updated a couple of large projects successfully also but since I am not updating their referenced Event at the same time, they open in their own Event called "Updated Projects". I want to get those projects into the Event I am working with. However if i try to drag them in FCPX wants to copy media in along with the project causing double ups - the media is already in the destination event (it's a managed event). I just want the edit moved from the "Updated Projects" event to the my main Event.

How can I achieve that?

Heya Doug,

Glad it's getting there for you! Anytime you move projects or events across Library lines with managed media that media is copied. The good news is that whether you are in the managed media camp or the external media camp, there are great and reliable new consolidation options inside 10.1 to help you out.

For me, keeping your media external makes more sense in 10.1, although in 10.0.9 my media was in my Events folder. SO when upgrading, you naturally run into what you are describing.

I would suggest, selecting your target Event (the event you are working with) and consolidating your media onto a single external location on the same drive, as the Library that contains the event and project.

Then, once you have done this, you can quickly move your project to it's home event without copying any managed media. (Ext media isn't managed) You end up with an event that contains your project(s) and all external media in one location on the same drive- and you're on your way to a light weight and shareable/quickly archivable, grouped or individual, Library/Event/Project Database.

Hope this helps!
Dusty

Thanks Dusty :) I actually had success by simply selecting a clip in the Updated Project event, selecting "Reveal in Finder" and then trashing the original Media folder. Back in FCPX all the files in the Updated Project event went offline and I dragged the project into the Event I wanted and the project came back online without any issues.

The bigger problem now is the first issue I described.

The Updating "Movies" library dialog quickly races up to about 98% on the progress bar but then just hangs there. FCPX does not become unresponsive but after a full 3 hours there was no progress.

I have 10 episodes of a show I am editing. I have chosen to upgrade mid-project because i am not working against a hard deadline, I have backups of everything including 10.0.9 and could really use the system performance offered by 10.1

Of the 10 episodes, 7 updated perfecty. But 3 (the most complete 3 of course) stubbornly refuse to be updated. FCPX does not crash or freeze but simply will not finish updating these projects and because the dialog window never closes I have to force quit FCPX.

I am running 10.0.9 on a laptop and have been going between systems to try to find what the issue is. Exporting an XML from 10.0.9 and importing that into 10.1 doesn't work. I get error messages as if the XML is corrupt but running Digital Rebellion's XML repair tool I am told the XML appears to be fine and doesn't need to be repaired.

The Projects all open fine in 10.0.9

I am currently in the process of removing everything but the cuts from the project (removing transitions, titles and effects) to simplify the edit as much as possible.

I suspect this could be plugin related, but I'm not 100% sure. I could sure use a remove attributes feature right now!

*edit - I have also tried trashing project render files and copy and pasting the edits into a new empty project. No dice. Also I should note this is not related to the duration of the project timeline. Longer project have come across fine.

Solved!!

The culprit was a 50% slowed clip with Optical Flow retiming applied which existed in the three projects in question and not the other projects. I removed it and the update worked :)

Thanks Dusty for your assistance!

Having just converted a large amount of projects and events to the new libraries I have observed a mostly successful process. Of the few errors I did get I was able to also trace those back to a particular clip or effect in each of the troubled projects that once removed solved the conversion issue. So 10.1 version does seem to be susceptible to certain effects and/or retiming on occasion within prior version projects. But strangely this is not always the case.
