Hi guys,
I haven't been using my 27" 3.1 i5 16GB RAM iMac as much since I got my Retina MBP, but it's always been a great edit machine without trouble. The other day, I plugged an external into the iMac and opened FCPX trying to show a project on a larger screen, and it crashed on opening, repeatedly. I didn't think much about it...later I cleaned up the computer, upgraded to Mavericks, did permissions and what not and moved it into a new space to start editing on it more regularly.
This time, I plug in a different drive with one small project and event on it, crash, crash, crash. I know the usual routine and I trashed preference, did permissions, cache clears, safe boots, finally I removed FCPX and re-istinalled. This morning, the new app will open and will run if I don't plugin the drive, but won't if it I do. This suggests a corrupt project or event, but they all run fine on my laptop, and I have the same problem no matter which events or projects are connected!
It also turns out, that if I take all of the effects out of the motion templates -> effects folder, FCPX *will* run with the external drive's projects and events. This suggests an effect is the problem, but if I put them back one by one, it doesn't matter which one I put, it crashes every-time. And these are effects I've used for a long now, and many of them aren't even on the project I'm trying to open.

I have a similar project that the same thing is happening to no matter what steps I take fix it.
My concern is I will have to start from scratch.
I have tried EVERYTHING
Good luck
Weird thing is I have three other projects on another dive and they are fine and completed.

Thanks, luckily I don't think is project specific, everything opens and edits fine on the laptop, and nothing opens and edits fine on the iMac, so at least I'm not losing anything, just want to use the screen to edit...

I haven't tried the project on my Macbook pro yet.
I will have too proxy the lot to get it to go at all.

Hi Guys. I have had similar problems in the past. I am just guessing here, but I do think that something is corrupt. The reason it may work on one computer and not another, is that the computer that opens it may not be getting hung up on a particular thread, where the other one is. The two times this has happened to me, my most robust machine could open the project, and the less well equipped machines would crash. I would say that the project is not "fine" in the sense that whatever the problem is may expand to the point that neither machine will open it. Again, these are just guesses based on trial and error. I understand little about what happens behind the scenes of my ui. My suggestion is, that you take the opportunity to transfer your project by way of creating a new project from scratch and copying and pasting your work into the new project. It is an inelegant solution, but one that has done the trick for me in the past (in X and legacy).

Hi Daniel,
I've got 20 different projects on five different drives, all working on one computer, and not on the other. Something is up with the iMac. I forgot to mention that I installed Parallels awhile back, I wonder if that could be causing a conflict?

I've had similar experiences on bigger projects. I've used project repair by digital rebellion with varying success. It's deceptively named as you can use it on events and projects. Also the FCP7ish icon doesn't help the case either but it does work on FCP X.
I don't even play a doctor on TV, but I read webmd sometimes, does that count? Prolly not.

Do you have plug-ins installed on the iMac that are not installed on the MBP? If you do, try disabling it ( or them).
