I have a 2012 Retina with 8Gb RAM, and wish I had 16Gb.

Mavericks is much better at handling memory (specifically with Safari), and the system is considerably happier as a result, but I still hit RAM issues when editing. On my Mac Pro I went from 10Gb RAM to 18Gb and found FCPX considerably quicker, especially towards the end of a long working day and when running Photoshop and Motion simultaneously - the Retina is broadly comparable on raw performance but in use it's nowhere close, thanks primarily to the limited RAM.

Since the RAM in a Retina MacBook Pro isn't user-upgradable, I'd strongly recommend buying a 16Gb system from the start.

16 GB RAM is the choice I'd make.
